dog allergies in infants

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology or AAAAI estimates that about 10 million pet lovers or pet owners in the United States are allergic to animals’ fur.

More and more households in the country are adopting or sheltering a pet dog, which is considered man’s best friend even from the time of the ancient civilization.

Dogs are canines that are perceived as intelligent and trainable among all other animals. We see dogs everywhere, in the movies, in cartoons, in the television (remember Lassie?), and even in high-security areas like malls. In the latter case, dogs are trained to sniff bombs, drugs and other illegal substances in the surroundings.

The world is a ‘dog eat dog world’ and it can be even found truthful if you are allergic to dogs.

Dog allergies and cat allergies in similarities and contrast

However, there are more reported or diagnosed cases of cat allergies than dog allergies all throughout the world because cats are more inclined to spread their danders through their habitual and constant grooming or bathing session by rubbing saliva all throughout their body.

Dog allergy can be found in people with specific allergies to dog furs and those who have history of asthma. Asthma is another reaction triggered by exposure to allergens or allergy-causing substances.

Modern science and recent findings indicate that people who were exposed to either cats and dogs while they were infants will unlikely develop cat or dog allergy. It is because their immune system will get accustomed to the two animals’ danders at an early stage.

Also take notice that people who have developed cat or dog allergy grew up in households where there were no cats or dogs around. Start asking now, or likely, begin by looking at yourself or somebody you know. The assumption is accurate, right?

Symptoms of dog allergy

Just like in any other form of allergy, symptoms or manifestation of dog allergy include wheezing, coughing, itchy and/ or teary or watery eyes and constant sneezing.

Severe dog allergy attacks can be indicated by difficulty in breathing, which is similar to a severe asthma attack. If left untreated, the person’s life could be in danger.

But remember, treatments for asthma and other allergies, including dog allergy are only treatments or relievers. They are not meant and they can not ensure long term cures.

Allergies are not curable, they are only treatable. Hence, dog allergy if successfully treated will reoccur if the person or the patient exposes himself again to dog fur or danders.

Treatment and avoidance

The best treatment is always prevention. As they say, an ounce of prevention is far better than pounds of cure. So it is in the case of dog allergies.

To treat dog allergies, the patient will have to be advised that he should avoid getting near or cuddling dogs. Through that, dog allergy can be successfully controlled or curtailed.

But if that basic prevention measure is ineffective, the patient will have to take either antihistamines, decongestants or corticosteroids. Antihistamines are the common drugs taken during asthma or other allergy attacks.

Decongestants decongest breathing areas or tubes in the body by reducing swellness of nasal tissues thus relieving breathing.

Corticosteroids on the other hand, are drugs that reduce or eliminate inflammation of organs or tissues in the body that may have resulted from the onset of the dog allergy.

dog food intolerances

The most natural choice dog food currently is commercial dog food. That’s as far as a dog ‘owner’ is concerned. If it was up to your dog, that wouldn’t be the case. How would your dog choose?

I believe dogs are inherently intelligent and know, on a deep level, what is good and healthy for them. This natural ability is often upset, just as in humans, by the daily consumption of junk food, year in, year out. Your dog can become addicted.

But if your dog had the freedom to a natural choice dog food from a puppy, what would you see?

I had just that experience, when a dog came into my home, for the first time since becoming an adult.

I was by then, feeding my cats raw meat and bones, having made the conversion a couple of years before.

I hadn’t expected to get a dog, she catapulted into my life, so I was unprepared. I didn’t know what to feed her. Here was this abandoned, energetic puppy, about eight weeks old, who had made it very clear to me that I was the chosen one. She intended to live with me, so I’d better just get used to the idea.

Still racking my brains for a clue as to her diet, I decided to purchase a couple of tins, while I tried to work it out. After all, they were supposed to be ‘balanced’, ‘nutritionally complete’, ‘recommended by top vets’ weren’t they?

My dog knew better.

Even though I was feeding her separately from the cats, she knew what I was feeding them.

And she didn’t like what I was offering her.

Abandoned dogs have often suffered a lack in regular or sufficient food. Even so, she left her food and raced to where the cats were, whining and leaping about as only puppies can, desperately trying to tell me that THIS was her natural choice dog food.

I ended up throwing away a tin and a half of dog food. I capitulated and fed her the same as the cats, just more of it, until I could be sure of the correct amount and type.

She remained fit, energetic and healthy up to about eleven years of age, with absolutely no veterinary intervention of any sort except sterilisation at about six months. She kept her figure, was always interested in everything going on, had a lovely glossy coat.

Her natural choice dog food was raw meat and bones. She chose it. She never had any other type of dog food.

It was me who was the barrier to try initially. I had to sort out my prejudices, my beliefs, my ingrained ideas of healthy dog food that I had gained over the years, from childhood, through advertisements. That was my biggest hurdle to allowing my dog her right for her natural choice dog food.

Quarantine means a six month kennel stay to ensure that a pet is not incubating one of a number of contagious diseases. For many years there was no alternative but quarantine for pets entering this country – the principal concern being to maintain our rabies – free state. However, the advent of improved identification techniques and better preventative medicines now means that the alternative Pet Travel Scheme is available, operated by DEFRA (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs).

Requirements of the Scheme

Microchipping
A microchip must be implanted into a dog or cats scruff. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted by injection, usually, but not necessarily, by a veterinarian. Most pets react very little to this injection, but it may be a little painful. The chip carries a unique identity number which is logged along with the owners details onto a central data base. At every stage of the procedures listed the microchip will be checked by means of a scanner, which detects the individual number.
The cost of microchipping can vary between £10 – £30.

Vaccination
Dogs and cats should have a current vaccination against the common contagious diseases according to established UK protocols.

Rabies vaccination will need to be administered, This can be done at any time but will commonly be the first step of the Travel Scheme Program alongside microchipping. There are several rabies vaccination products licensed for use in the UK. Currently all of the vaccines are licensed to be used as a single injection. However, the chance of an inadequate response to the vaccination can be reduced by giving a second injection after a period of 2-4 weeks. Manufacturers data sheets state a booster requirement at one, two, or three year intervals. Unfortunately the requirements of European states differ, which often means that an annual booster is necessary.
Blood testing for post vaccination rabies antibodies
It is necessary to have proof of a positive response to the rabies vaccination. This is achieved by a blood test to measure anti-rabies antibodies. The test can now be taken by your veterinary surgeon from fourteen days after the rabies vaccination is administered. The sample must be sent to a government approved laboratory who will issue the submitting veterinary surgeon with a certificate stating the antibody response.
Re-entry to the UK is not permitted until six months after the date of a positive blood sample being taken, although pets can leave the UK at any time.

Passport
On receipt of a satisfactory result for the rabies response, a veterinary surgeon can supply your pets passport. This is a uniquely numbered book in which all details of microchip identification, vaccinations and blood testing are entered alongside records of administration of parasite treatments given prior to re-entry to the UK.

Parasite control
Because of the risk of contracting certain worms and ticks which can act as carriers for serious infectious diseases (Leishmaniasis, transmitted by sand flies and Ehrlichiosis, transmitted by Ticks)
it is necessary to treat pets for these parasites prior to re-entry. Several wormer products are available including Drontal Plus, and Milbemax tablets. Tick control can be achieved using Scalibor collars and Advantix, Advocate and Frontline spot on products. It is necessary for the administration of a suitable product to be witnessed by a vet 24-48 hours prior to re-entry.

dog allergies itchy skin

The types of itch were explained in the last article, “Scratching Dog I – Identifying the 4 Types of Itch.” Here we will discuss what you can do “For Immediate Relief,” and “Treatments.”

For Immediate Relief

Whatever type of itch your scratching dog has, avoid contact with possible toxins, such as fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other possible irritants.

Many people think baby shampoo is very mild. However, that is not true. Baby shampoo contains many chemicals to prevent tearing. These chemicals can irritate broken, sensitive skin. Also, if the skin is irritated or has developed a hot spot, do not apply flea power as it will further irritate the skin.

Unless you are going immediately to a veterinarian, bathe your scratching dog using a mild shampoo (not ‘baby shampoo’). Oatmeal soap or a medicated dog shampoo is specifically made for scratchy skin. It is important to use COOL WATER only when you bathe your dog.

If your veterinarian is not immediately available and your scratching dog is also biting its skin, this may be a more severe case and you may wish to consider using a dog antihistamine. Antihistamines work less than half the time; but when they work, it will bring relief to a miserable pet. However, use caution and watch your dog carefully as some dogs do not react well to antihistamines. You can find these products in a pet store.

Treatments

Along with the Immediate Relief procedures, the following is specific information.

Occasional Itching: 1) If your dog has fleas, use a flea product. 2) If your dog has a diet deficiency, it is easily cured and prevented with an improved diet. Try a better quality dog food.

Persistent Itching: Allergies are difficult cases because of the wide range of possible allergens, the methods needed to detect them, and treatments. In general, in mild allergy cases, a change in dog food may be enough. If your dog has a environmental contact allergy, washing the dog bed, rug, and toys and/or a change in care products may solve the problem.

In worse cases or if the problem is persistent, you will need to visit the veterinarian. Your vet will be able to rule out other diseases that can mimic allergy itching, and provide other services such as prescribing the correct medication. Your vet will also guide you in screening for common food allergens by one of several methods.

Chronic Itching: Treatment should start as soon as possible as hot spot bacteria will spread. There are medications available that can be applied to the infected area that can clear up the problem within a few days. These products usually have a menthol taste which dogs usually dislike. It is very important that the dog not lick or continue to bite the infected area.

Hot Spots are often, but not always, triggered by a new allergy. Therefore, you should contact your veterinarian. The allergen must be identified and eliminated from the dog’s environment or food. Your vet can advise you on the best method for your dog’s circumstances.

Severe Itching: Your veterinarian will take a scrapping and a lab test will confirm which type of infection is present. Specific medications will be prescribed to treat your dog’s condition.

It is unfortunate that any dog might become a scratching dog. However, it is very rare that itchy skin cannot be treated successfully. In some cases, it can take time to discover the exact problem and deal with it effectively. But with diligence and determination, your pet can return to its happy, contented self.

Note: The information in this article about a scratching dog is for general information only and is not intended to replace the advice of your veterinarian.

Commercial dog food has questionable quality and nutrition, depending on the brand and their ethics at the time.

By taking control of what you feed your dog, you are taking the enormous step into assuring his maximum potential for a long and healthy life.

If your dog is healthy, you’ll have fewer trips to the vet, saving you probably many thousands of dollars.

But trying to work out how to make nutritious homemade dog food recipes to keep your dog interested, at the same time juggling work, family and home life, can be daunting.

But it needn’t be.

It’s only a question of you getting your head around a few basic concepts about healthy dog food.

For example, seven different homemade dog food recipes gives your dog a different meal every day of the week.

It also gives you a routine which is easy to work and plan for. Shopping just becomes too easy, with the same things to buy every week.

Arming yourself with the knowledge that nature knows best, after all the dog evolved very well without any help from us for aeons, you can come close to a wild dog’s diet.

Enzymes are an all important part of everyone’s diet, including dogs. So you need to ensure these are kept alive and well in the dog food you prepare.

Some nutrients are only found in organ meats, but these can be easily overfed. What is the optimum amount of organ meat in your dog’s diet and which ones should you feed?

There is one essential part of a dog’s daily diet which, if left out, will  cause tooth decay, unhealthy gums and most likely an unhappy dog.

Many ‘experts’ disagree on its inclusion in a dog’s diet. By bypassing the inconsistencies of ‘experts’ and going back to the only real expert – nature – you are not left wondering who may be right and who may be wrong.

Your homemade dog food recipes needs to ensure all micro and all macro minerals are included.

Your dog manufactures some vitamins himself, but others must be included in his diet.

This means you need to know the nutrients in each type of food.

Although your homemade dog food recipes will naturally keep your dog slim and in good overall health, some dogs are naturally fat and some are naturally slim. You need to know how to vary each ingredient to suit your individual dog.

There are many, no doubt well intentioned, people who write that certain foods are dangerous to dogs. However, if your dog is receiving a well balanced diet, based on a wild dogs diet, he won’t be ravenous and will become very aware of the difference between what is good for him and what is not. You won’t need to worry that he may ingest something poisonous to him.

A constantly ravenous dog is normally one who is not receiving a balanced diet, rather one which is devoid of essential nutrients.

For your dog’s sake, learn some homemade dog food recipes. It really isn’t difficult. And your dog will love you all the more for it.

homemade dog food vegetarian
Homemade vegetarian dog food?

My 17 year old springer spaniel has cirrohsis of the liver. Most dogs don’t live long enough to get it, but most small dogs will get cirrohsis if they live long enough.

I need a couple of recipes that will combine pasta and veggies. Or other things that are not meat.
Rosie almost died. The vet told me she had cirrohsis of the liver and was now a vegetarian for the remainer of her life.

That was a year ago. When she gets hold of a little bit of meat, she sinks to a point that I’m afraid she’ll die during the night.

The oldest dog, listed in Guinness book of records, died last year at the age of 27 years old. She was raised entirely on a diet of lentils and rice, with all fresh garden vegetables in season. She was healthy and active till the end, but required swimming exercise her last couple of years to stay comfortable.
To get your dog to accept a vegetarian diet, you can cook using broth from boiled meats or fish or canned, low sodium broth.

Is Eukanuba Premium a good dog food?

Hi there,
I’m asking this because i have 2 dogs a 5 year old Yorkie Pom and a 3 1/2 year old 3 legged white poodle-bichon mix. I currently feed them Royal Canin which i purchase from my vet for $75 per new bag. Everyone on here has said that its not a very good food, and the vet only says it is because she sells it for the company. So i went on this dog food analysis site that went from best to worst and Eukanuba was like 2nd or 3rd and so i’m thinking about switching to it instead. If you’ve fed your dogs this or if you currently feed them this can you please tell your opinion? I want 2nd opinions before i go out and buy it.Thank you!

Get ready for a huge debate! Eukanuba can suit some dogs very well. Others, not so. Im feeding my youngest pup royal canin because thats what she does well on. But it doesnt work for my other 2 so all 3 of my dogs are on different foods.

Its all trial and error and you can drive yourself crazy striving to find that “prfect food”.Only you can tell what your dog does well on
