dog allergies wheezing
Should I be worried about this wheezing?

My 9 month old Yorkie has been wheezing a lot lately. He has these “attacks” where he wheezes very rapidly and his entire body shakes. These episodes last for about 20 seconds each. Otherwise, he is a very healthy and happy dog.
Are these allergies? What else could it be? Should I take him to the vet?

It is reverse sneezing. My Yorkie did the same and grew out of it after awhile.

Avoid dog ear infections by practicing preventive care. That means regularly examine and clean your dog’s ears. Cleaning your dog’s ears is important for good grooming and overall health. This is especially true for canines with pendulous ears, lots of hair in their ears, allergies or other medical problems that render them susceptible to ear infections.

Keeping the dog’s ears clean is important because a damp environment creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and fungus, often leading to painful sensitivity, redness, swelling and infection.

Some guardians never check their dog’s ears unless the dog is shaking or scratching its ear(s).

That’s unfortunate because, by that time, there is usually an ear health problem requiring veterinary intervention to determine if the dog is infected, infested or needs treatment.

Before cleaning the dog’s ears, inspect for potential problems. Take note of any matter in and around the ear canal, particularly excess wax. A dark wax may be a sign of ear mites.

Do not use water when cleaning your dog’s ears.

A weekly ear cleaning with an approved cleansing solution, or a mixture described at the bottom of the page that you can prepare at home, minimizes or prevents dog ear infections.

If ear problems are discovered, soak a cotton ball thoroughly in the ear wash. Squeeze out excess and gently clean dirt, wax and other matter from the exterior area of the ear, and consult your veterinarian. Hold the ear flap up so the ear is tilted up; fill the ear with cleanser until it runs out. Do this while holding a towel to catch overflow from head shaking. Gently massage the base of the dog’s ears so you hear a squishing sound. If your dog attempts to move around the ear may be infected or you may be massaging too vigorously to free the discharge, so be very gentle. Aggressive pressure is not required.

Unless the ear is infected, the dog will probably enjoy this part of the cleaning.

If you don’t hear the squishing sound, you may not have enough cleaning solution in the ear or you are not creating enough movement. The cleaning will start at the part that protrudes from the side of the head or flops over, and also the external part of the ear that is gnarled, fleshy and, in some breeds, hairy around the entrance to the ear canal. From the external opening, the L-shaped ear canal descends vertically before taking a 90-degree bend for a horizontal jaunt to the ear drum. You should clean up to the external ear canal and no further — the vertical part before the 90-degree bend! Use your finger as a gauge to a safe access area to clean into the external ear canal — as far as you can see with a flashlight — and gently clean with a cotton-tipped swab only if you have been instructed by your veterinarian.

Otherwise, use cotton balls or soft cotton cloths around the entrance to the ear canal, with a gentle, veterinary-approved cleaner. Be careful not to rub too hard as you can do more harm than good by rubbing the ears raw, leaving a nesting ground for bacteria and ultimately infection. Hydrogen peroxide is sometimes recommended but should be avoided because it leaves excess moisture and that can lead to the very difficulties you are trying to prevent. Finally, use an ear drying powder or cream and fold ear flaps back for about five minutes to dry canals.

You’ll be surprised at the amount of debris you can remove.

If you would prefer to make your own dog ear cleaner, here are three good recipes your veterinarian will approve of. Choose one or the other, don’t use them all at the same time, and never use them to treat an ear infection.

Recipe #1: Mix one part white vinegar with one part rubbing alcohol (50/50 mixture) in a squirt bottle and shake well.

Recipe #2: Mix 50/50 vinegar and water, massage it in the ear for 60 seconds, clean the dog’s ear with cotton balls (not Q-tips). If your pet requires medication, apply it afterwards.

Recipe #3: For cleaning and to get rid of ear mites, soak a few crushed garlic cloves in oil (mineral oil, olive oil, or almond oil) overnight. Garlic helps kill the bacteria that can lead to ear infections. Put 3-5 drops of oil in the ear canal after thoroughly cleaning your dog’s ears. Do this once a day for at least a month. Oil will smother and starve the mites.

Use dog ear cleaning recipes only as indicated above. Site owners or their agents will not be responsible for any injuries resulting in the use or misuse of the recipes. Use with your own discretion.

dog allergies bumps
my dog is always itching and I don’t want to keep him on prescription medicine. he has allergies to something?

does anyone know of something i can give him that is somewhat natural? he gets these hives/bumps on him. the vet gave me a script for predizone(spelling?) but it’s not something I want to keep him on for a long time. I give him benadryl every other day it helps but not enough. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
I only feed him dry dog food. Dog chow. he is a pitbull/Am bull dog mix if that helps
(Rhyno) My vet did prescribe Benadryl for my dog. he also told me that it was not good to keep him on predizone his whole life or long term. don’t assume things before you give your two cents. I don’t need any smart ass comments from an uninformed asshole

I would change him to an all natural dog food and see if that doesn’t take care of the problem.

If not maybe he’s allergic to something you are using in the home. Good Luck

There are many ways that you can have identification on your dog besides the tradition dog collar tag.

The most important thing you can do for your dog if it was ever to get lost is to have a collar on it. If you dog were to escape having a dog collar or dog harness on would notify the person that found them that is it someone’s pet.

Besides the traditional metal dog tags, you can also get your dog’s collar monogrammed with their name and your contact phone number. Personalized dog collars are a great way to have a one of a kind dog collar.

But the issues with a just a dog collar is that sometimes collar can come off. If you only rely on a dog collar, you risk the chance of it coming off and the finder not being able to contact you. One of the best ways to combat this is to have your dog microchipped. When a dog is microchipped, a rice size implant is put under their skin between their shoulder blades. In this chip is your contact information and many times your dog’s vet information. When you dog is found by animal control, brought into a vet clinic, or taken to the humane society as a stray, one of the first things they do is scan it to see if it has a microchip. Microchips will not come off like a collar will, so this is a great way to protect your dog from getting lost.

Besides a traditional metal dog tags and microchipping, there are other options that are available for your dog. The one you choose is based on your lifestyle, budget, and personal preference.

dog allergies zyrtec
Could I be allergic to my boyfriend?

Every time I get around him (especially if we’ve been cuddling) my nose starts to itch terribly and I’ll sneeze. I have some normal seasonal allergies but they have been almost completely helped by Zyrtec. It will also happen even if I’ve been in a space for a long time with no allergies at all (for example my room) and he’ll come in and they’ll start!

We have been joking about this for awhile now but it’s becoming more and more apparent and undeniable (two years of this happening?!) Does anyone know of any potential causes or coincidences for this?

Here are some details:

1. He tends to shed a lot (i find his hairs everywhere)
2. He says he uses completely non-allergenic detergent
3. He uses Sauve shampoo
4. He doesn’t use cologne or any sort of body spray
5. I have never encountered a skin rash after contact with him
6. He has a dog but doesn’t live with the dog and usually doesn’t see the dog or get near it before visiting me

Thank you!

I dont think its possible to be allergic to a person. Theres probably something that he wears that has an allergin in it.

dog allergies mold
Very Bad allergies and I have Asthma?

Okay so I’m currently taking:
-Advair diskus 500/50 (for 2 weeks, then dropping to the 250/50) unless I do great on the 500/50my peak flow was 130 yesterday, my high peak flow is 590.
- Singulair
- Allergy eye drops
- Chlorpheniramine (Antihistamine)
- Benedryl only use PRN at night time (25mg-50mg)
oh and my rescue inhaler when I need it.

Anyone else on this much medications?

Well i just got on Advair (yesterday) I was taking Flovent 110mcg of fluticasone propionate. Was helping until this week, now like I said I’m on Advair, I noticed a difference about 40 mins after taking the first inhaltion of it.

I’m allergic to everything I swear, peanuts, soybeans, every tree, every kind of grass, mold, and cats! (not allergic to dogs! who hoo! ) they did that basic allergy test on me and I’m allergic to 19 of the 40 things they tested me for. I was told by my MD to get allergy shots, but I don’t like needles…

Take a look at this link. There may be some info you can use.

are dog allergies dangerous
Im extremly allergic. I cant move. and my sisters have 2 dogs and a cat now. what should i do?

im in college, not prepared to afford to move out yet. my older sisters have 2 dogs and a cat. last year i was diagnosed with extremly allergies and cat hair in particular is dangerous for me, and this is true. my health has been getting worse through the months, now iam developing asthma and i havent been able to breath clearly anymore for more then a year. my sisters wont give up the pets, what can i do? or say to make them realize i’ve been feeling extremely sick past 3 days and im scared
thank you guys soo much all of you gave me big ideas, which i can use to manage things for now, i dont want to pick a best answer because all of you were great, but i guess i have to, thanks to all , all of you r so cute!

My son has a pet dander allergy, He only has asthma reactions around animals or places where animals have been.

His reactions are so bad they can kill him. When we moved to the new house we paid a lot of money to have his room done in hardwood, because of dust mites and pet dander we have a special cover for his bed, can only vacume when he is not home on the carpeted areas and will never have a dog. we really didn’t have the money either but his health required us to do something drastic. I love him and could not imagine life without him and animal pet dander can kill him. Sure we go to the zoo he has to take benedryl before we go and then when we come home again usually we have to do a nebulizer treatment for two days after, and we have to use the inhalers too, he isn’t missing out on things we just have to do them differently.

He will never know what it is like to have a dog or cat or hamster, ONLY FISH.

He is only three, we get to control things, if you have the allergy money or not your parents should help you to understand, your older sister should know the risks involved is her sister more important than the dogs and cat, if not you need to work an extra job and leave your life may depend on it.

I don’t know how sever yours is or if you have to go to that extream, but we did and now we haven’t done any treatments or inhalers in almost 4 months, which before at the old house was daily, ER visits monthly which was expensive for each visit. We haven’t spent that much more because medical costs are so much less so really it was a good financial and healthy decision.
