Could anyone tell me any Grade B and Grade A dog foods? I have looked at a lot of dog food in pet stores and they all seem to have the Grade C rating. Thanks.

Good/Bad feedback for Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul pet food (dry) and Before Grain canned/wet food?
I have recently changed my pets’ foods to healthier (no by-products or grains) foods. My golden retriever is eating Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover’s Soul Large Breed Puppy Formula and my cat is eating Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul Adult Cat Formula and I was just wanting to hear of some experiences with these types of food.
I am not planning to feed my dog wet food but my cat has always had and LOVES it so I was looking for a better brand that what he is on now (Fancy Feast), which, after researching it, almost all of it either contains grains or by-products or both. I was at a pet store the other day and saw Before Grain canned cat food, which is 100% chicken, turkey, quail, etc. depending on the flavor. I believe “Before Grain” is a Merrick brand and was wondering if anyone has had any good or bad experiences with this?

Hi Christy… Before Grain is a Merrick product. I have read reviews which have been both equally positive as well as negative. It is a good product line if either your dog or cat doesn’t turn their nose away from it, it’s worth trying.
Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul is also an excellent product and there are others (both wet and dry) for dogs and cats you may like to consider.

Ok…my 11 mo old Havanese puppy is really picky so we’ve tried every food and she seemed to have liked Eukanuba Lamb and Rice. Now, 7 months later, she doesn’t want to eat and will literally spit out some of her food (and could take her 2 hours to eat). I want to change her to adult food- any suggestions?. Right now she goes #2 about 3x’s a day, soft and it REALLY stinks! I don’t mind spending a little more money within reason of course! I know everyone has there own opinion but advice is greatly appreciated. Also- has anyone heard of or uses Kirkland (Costco) chicken, rice and veggie? Thanks in advance!
Many of my Havies through the years are picky eaters.
Look for a food that does not have any animal by-products.
My foods are usually no-grain – no fillers – so I can feed less and still give the dogs high quality. Don’t use dogfoods that have a protein over 23 to 24% – Try samples first – the dog will tell you what they like. Go for small sized kibble – easier to chew. My dogs enjoy fresh veggies with their kibble-
I also use the frozen dog foods available in my area.
Try baked sweet potato – very healthy and most dogs enjoy it.

Why does my dog head butt her food/bones/water dish before eating and drinking?
Ever since she was a puppy, my dog has a strange ritual where she head butts her food dish and water dish before taking small drinks or bites. It takes her almost an hour to eat her meals because of this behavior. Also, she splashes half of the water all over the floor in the process. Its not really a big deal or anything, I am just curious as to where this behavior comes from. I have read plenty on dog behavior, but this one honestly has me puzzled. She is a 3 year old Lhasa Apso with a very sweet temperment. She never guards or protects her food or toys in anyway. She also displays this behavior with her chewing bones and greenies while she is chewing them

Sounds to me like she is trying to mark it as hers. Lhasas are naturally territorial, and she is probably trying to get her smell on it to say “This is mine”. My lhasa, Tasha, used to roll and root on and head butt all of her toys and bones everyday. She just wanted to make sure that they all smelled like her.
