dog cancer treatment

Dog mange is a treatable disorder, and one that has many treatment options available for the dog, depending on the severity and the variety of the mange infestation. The most common mange treatment is the anti-mange wash.

This is a procedure that will take time to be effective, sometimes as long as six months, because the treatment can only be done once a month. The repeated treatments are done to make sure that the mange population is kept in check and that new ones that are hatched will also be eliminated.

On the first few treatments, the mange will look like it is getting worse, and there will be new red bumps on the dog’s skin where there weren’t any before. That’s because the medicine will penetrate the skin of the dog to reach the mites buried beneath the dog’s skin, and this will irritate the area. It will also be very uncomfortable for the dog as these mites start “emerging” from their burrows.

You should also expect that the dog will seem lethargic after each treatment. The mange bath medication can be quite strong and the dog will be inhaling it during the treatment sessions. You will also have to bear with the smell of the medication because you can’t give your dog a bath after the mange wash.

Try to prevent the dog from licking at his chops after the treatment. Some of the mange wash medication will be ingested by the dog that way. Though it will not kill your dog, it will definitely give him a stomach upset. Also, keep him from scratching because this may cause wounds. If your dog has wounds, he will not be given the treatment wash, and this will prolong the process of him getting better.

Remember that the mange washes will only get rid of the mites that are on the dog and not his surroundings. That’s why you should isolate the dog and wash the beddings that he has used. Other dogs can catch it by just coming in contact with something that and infected dog has lain in. Worse, there are some types of mites that can live in a human’s skin as well.

The treatments can get quite expensive, but if your dog needs a series of baths, you may be able to work out a payment plan with your vet.

dog food kibbles

Most people who have dogs in their lives, reach for the easy option of commercial dog food. There is little thought that goes into it.

Or perhaps they feel their veterinarian knows best and they buy what they offer.

Either way, the health of your dog will suffer.

But you know that already, or you wouldn’t be here.

As you’re considering feeding a raw food diet for dogs, you’ve come a long way and first up, need congratulating!

I find that the most difficult part of changing anything in my life, is the initial reluctance to change my mind. It’s no mean feat. But now that you’ve done that, the rest is easy.

Or comparatively!

A raw food diet for dogs is what they evolved. on. You can’t beat or better nature. Nature has had a long time perfecting herself. Puny man and his pseudo ideas are no match!

But I’m sure you still have questions. For a start, what should you feed your dog, and how much?

Are there any foods to avoid or limit?

Should bones be a part of the raw food diet for dogs?

And lastly, how can you fit it into your busy schedule of juggling work, family and hopefully a bit of time for you?

Well, lets answer the last question first. Buying raw food is no less difficult or time consuming than buying commercial dog food. Putting meat instead of a packet into your trolly takes the same energy!

The other questions on what and what not to feed dogs have already been discovered by others who have gone before you. So you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. It’s already been done. Just follow in someone else’s footsteps.

It does take a little bit of time to get used to what to feed and how much, but once you have the hang of it, it becomes second nature.

Feeding a raw food diet for dogs is really the start of other things too. Such as listening to your dog. He will tell you what he likes to eat and what he doesn’t. He’ll also tell you what medicines he’s happy to take and what he doesn’t like and would prefer you not to insist.

It’s a whole new world, and one I can’t recommend enough!

royal canin dog food hypoallergenic
Royal Canin dog fod?

So I just got back from a visit to the vet because of my dogs ear infections. He said that he thinks it is allergies and that I should switch to royal canin hypoallergenic veterinary formula. I have her on innova right now which I know is a good food and shows it in it’s ingredients. He gave me a bag of the royal canin and I am very disappointed in the meat content in this food. Meat doesn’t show up in the ingredients list until the third ingredient and it is in the form of chicken fat! I have heard that royal canin is a good food, so I am just curious what you all think. How can it be a good food with ingredients like that? It is just because it is the hypoallergenic formula? My vet was adamant about me switching to this food but I want to be feeding her something that is really good for her…not just fillers. The first three ingredients in the food are: Rice, Soy protein isolate hydrosolate and chicken fat.

vets are not nutritionists. They sell prescription diests because that’s what they sell.

I personally do no like royal canin.. they have the “breed specific” diets which I think are a fad thing.

I would reccommend California Natural.. in particular, the herring and sweet potato formula, to rule out food allergies. They have very few ingredients. Its also from the same company that makes Evo.

dog allergies itchy skin

The types of itch were explained in the last article, “Scratching Dog I – Identifying the 4 Types of Itch.” Here we will discuss what you can do “For Immediate Relief,” and “Treatments.”

For Immediate Relief

Whatever type of itch your scratching dog has, avoid contact with possible toxins, such as fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other possible irritants.

Many people think baby shampoo is very mild. However, that is not true. Baby shampoo contains many chemicals to prevent tearing. These chemicals can irritate broken, sensitive skin. Also, if the skin is irritated or has developed a hot spot, do not apply flea power as it will further irritate the skin.

Unless you are going immediately to a veterinarian, bathe your scratching dog using a mild shampoo (not ‘baby shampoo’). Oatmeal soap or a medicated dog shampoo is specifically made for scratchy skin. It is important to use COOL WATER only when you bathe your dog.

If your veterinarian is not immediately available and your scratching dog is also biting its skin, this may be a more severe case and you may wish to consider using a dog antihistamine. Antihistamines work less than half the time; but when they work, it will bring relief to a miserable pet. However, use caution and watch your dog carefully as some dogs do not react well to antihistamines. You can find these products in a pet store.

Treatments

Along with the Immediate Relief procedures, the following is specific information.

Occasional Itching: 1) If your dog has fleas, use a flea product. 2) If your dog has a diet deficiency, it is easily cured and prevented with an improved diet. Try a better quality dog food.

Persistent Itching: Allergies are difficult cases because of the wide range of possible allergens, the methods needed to detect them, and treatments. In general, in mild allergy cases, a change in dog food may be enough. If your dog has a environmental contact allergy, washing the dog bed, rug, and toys and/or a change in care products may solve the problem.

In worse cases or if the problem is persistent, you will need to visit the veterinarian. Your vet will be able to rule out other diseases that can mimic allergy itching, and provide other services such as prescribing the correct medication. Your vet will also guide you in screening for common food allergens by one of several methods.

Chronic Itching: Treatment should start as soon as possible as hot spot bacteria will spread. There are medications available that can be applied to the infected area that can clear up the problem within a few days. These products usually have a menthol taste which dogs usually dislike. It is very important that the dog not lick or continue to bite the infected area.

Hot Spots are often, but not always, triggered by a new allergy. Therefore, you should contact your veterinarian. The allergen must be identified and eliminated from the dog’s environment or food. Your vet can advise you on the best method for your dog’s circumstances.

Severe Itching: Your veterinarian will take a scrapping and a lab test will confirm which type of infection is present. Specific medications will be prescribed to treat your dog’s condition.

It is unfortunate that any dog might become a scratching dog. However, it is very rare that itchy skin cannot be treated successfully. In some cases, it can take time to discover the exact problem and deal with it effectively. But with diligence and determination, your pet can return to its happy, contented self.

Note: The information in this article about a scratching dog is for general information only and is not intended to replace the advice of your veterinarian.

dog cancer mouth
My dog has bone cancer, mainly in his mouth. Eating is difficult. He is not in any pain. Any suggestions?

You may want to go to a softer food. Here is what I feed my puppies. Maybe you can adapt it to your dog.

I take a can of goats milk and mix in a jar of meat (usually chicken or lamb) baby food. This I warm up until it is slightly warm. When they get older, I add in some dry kibble and let it soak then smush it up.

You may also want to add in a bit of rice or rice cereal. Some cottage cheese would be easy on him to mix in. Also, for fiber, get some canned pumpkin like you use for pies. It is a mush and is good to mix in. You might also want to get a good multi vitamin from your vet or a pet supply house. If it is liquid it would be easier but if you get pill, get a pill crusher so it is powder fine.

Good luck

dog cancer treatments
How much does it usually cost for cancer treatment in dogs? Approx 5k, 10k, 15k?

I am purchasing vet insurance with cancer coverage but do not know a realistic amount of what cancer really cost.

Call your vet and ask them, but I would assume it would depend on (1) breed of dog, (2) type of cancer, and (3) how advanced it is. My guess would be $5k maybe up to $10k, but call them and ask them for a range.

dog cancer liver

Cancer has become one of the most dreaded and the most hated word in the modern world. As incidences among both humans and their pets go up, the scramble to look for effective methods and options for treating dog cancer becomes a race.

Liver cancer in dog can be one of the toughest situations for a pet owner to face. Not only is the likelihood of losing the pet soon a reality, probably worse is the prospect of seeing her suffer through the agonies of the disease and its treatment.

The symptoms of various kinds of cancer in the dog can vary. In liver cancer in dog, symptoms range from recurrent abdominal or gastrointestinal problems, depression and lethargy, fluid accumulation in the belly, and jaundice, to seizures, weight loss, and so on. They are generalized enough to be often misinterpreted and ignored until the diseased is far progressed. Treating dog cancer in the later stages is much more difficult, and prognosis is proportionally lower.

Diagnosis involves physical examination, scans and biopsies, and treating dog cancer is a matter of surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. Tumors are first identified, and the diagnosis of cancer confirmed by biopsy. The malignant tumor can then be removed by surgery, followed by radiation or chemo treatment to eliminate any remaining cancerous cells. However, this method of treating dog cancer is only effective, or recommended, in the initial stages. Later stages, where the cancer spreads to other organs, do not respond well to surgery.

Alternative and holistic methods of treatment can improve the quality of life, and even the lifespan sometimes, making a big difference in the lives of both the pet and the owner. A healthy diet, and herbal or homeopathic remedies, alongside the chemotherapy, can mean a much less horrendous time for the pet. In some cases, using homeopathy or herbal remedies for treating dog cancer can even make a huge difference in the remission rate.
