dog health symptoms
i need help with my dogs health?

My dog is an outdoor dog, the is a labrador retriever. We put skin so soft on her to keep the bugs off but it hasn’t worked very well with all the flooding and extra mosquitoes. She has many bug bites that have swelled up. What can i do to easy the pain of the mosquitoes bites and keep all the other diseases they carry from hurting her. I give her her heart worm pill every month. Is there anything i should be concerned about otherwise? If so what are the symptoms.

There is nothing to worry about if you already give her heartworm pills.
Use a different bug repellent. Skin so-soft isn’t that good at keeping bugs off.
The kind that is marketed towards hunters and fisherman is the best kind to get for your dog.
Where I’m from, its called “Deep Woods Off”, but any other similar type will be good.
The higher percentage of “DEET the better.

dog allergies plants

If you have a dog with an allergy, choosing the right kind of treatment can be the difference between roaring success, and dismal failure. Of course, the first step is matching the type of dog allergy treatment to the type of allergy. Here is a breakdown of the types of allergy, and the recommended treatments.

If Your Dog Is Allergic to Inhalants
It may sound strange, but, like humans, dogs can be allergic to inhalants, like dust, pollen, and certain types of mold. Treatment for this kind of allergy could include avoidance, particularly in the case of dust or mold, where you keep your pet away from areas where they are likely to come into contact with the allergen.

If the allergy has resulted in itching, as it is likely to do, using a topical treatment like a shampoo regularly will help. It’s also been proven that adding essential fatty acids to your dog’s diet is an efficient dog allergy treatment for inhalant allergic dogs too. More dramatic allergies may require anti histamines, steroids, or even immunotherapy may be required.
Food Allergies

Often very difficult to pinpoint, at least the dog allergy treatment for food allergies is simple – avoid the food stuff(s) the dog is allergic to. Place your dog on a hypoallergenic diet, or a home cooked diet with simple ingredients, and that should be the end of that. You could also use many of the treatments listed for the inhalant allergic dog above, however, those would be a temporary solution only, and as soon as the treatment stopped, the allergy would return.

Contact Allergies
These are probably the least common dog allergies – this is when your dog becomes allergic to an item, like a particular type of blanket, or a plant, grass, or another item in his environment. Dog allergy treatment for contact allergies is much the same as for food allergies – temporary relief will be gained by using a standard treatment, but for long term relief, simply remove the allergen.

Flea Allergy
Many dogs are allergic to fleas, and when bitten, they develop allergy symptoms. In this case, common dog allergy treatments may help, but the key is to keep the dog, and his environment, free from fleas.

Remember, for every one flea you see on your dog, there are a hundred more in the environment, and even one flea can drive an allergic dog crazy with biting and scratching! Bathing, dipping and collars are the first line of defense, but remember to regularly treat his kennel or environment too, as there may be many fleas lurking there too.

Whichever kind of allergy your dog has, finding an effective dog allergy treatment is crucial to his well being. If you’ve ever had hay fever or hives as an allergic reaction, you’ll know just how unpleasant suffering with an allergy can be. You wouldn’t want to grin and bear it, would you? You’d seek help. So do the same for your best friend – find him a dog allergy treatment that works.

dog cancer care

Lymphosarcoma is one of the most common types of cancers seen. It is also referred to as lymphoma or non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In dogs, many different species develop Lymphosarcoma. Like any other cancer, this one can “metastasize”, which means it can spread and affect other organs and tissues. Most dogs get a type of Lymphosarcoma that originates the lymph nodes and usually the nodes under the jaw get swollen. Sometimes this is the only symptom your dog will have. But the jaw is not the only place where this disease can begin. Some forms of Lymphosarcoma begin in the bone marrow, the chest, abdomen, or even the skin.

DIAGNOSIS

It is difficult to detect the Lymphosarcoma because it can spread to many places in the body. So full analysis is essential to determine this disease and also establish the stage of disease. It is very important to determine the stage of the disease and decide the kind of treatment and the right dosage. Vets usually do the following tests in order to detect the stages:

* Cytology – checking the lymph node cells

* Blood work

* Abdominal radiographs

* Abdominal ultrasound

* Bone marrow analysis

Most of the times, the vets do just a few of the tests listed above. Even a few of the tests alone can determine the stage and if the dog can be submitted to the treatment.

DISEASE STAGES OF EVOLUTION

Lymphosarcoma has 4 stages.

In state I the cancer exists in just one lymph node. This stage is rarely diagnosed in pets.

In stage II the disease has spread to more than one node and has occupied a body region. In stage III the cancer is in the nodes but has spread in the body.

In stage IV the Lymphosarcoma has reached the liver or the spleen. There is also a stage V and it refers to all the stages above but with cancer spread to the bone marrow or the blood or any other organ.

The main stages have sub stages: “A” and “B”.

“A” means the patient doesn’t have the illness. “B” means the patient displays clinical symptoms like fluid in the lungs, vomiting or diarrhea.

Stage IIIA is the earliest detected and it can be treated.

MEANS OF TREATMENT

Many people have heard of chemotherapy. This means treatment with chemicals. The dog anti-cancer drugs, orally, intravenously, or subcutaneously. The good fact is that animals have a high tolerance to anti-cancer drugs, far better than humans. Also, side effects because of the treatment appear only in 5 cases out of 100.

Some of the most common questions a dog owner has are: Is the dog going to lose the hair? Usually, they don’t. But poodles and old English Sheepdogs are predisposed to lose their hair after chemotherapy. But don’t worry. It will grow back. Keep in mind that Lymphosarcoma treatable but not curable.

Will the disease come back and how long will it last? This depends on the type of Lymphosarcoma the dog has. But with the latest medical advances, approximately 90% of dogs achieve a complete remission. The average remission is between 8 and 12 months.

What happens after the dog comes out of remission? It can be treated just like the first time. Also, the second and third remissions are treatable.

The whole cost of the treatment begins at about $500 and can go up to $2,000 in case of a large pet.

dog food online

Most people feel reassured by the pictures of smiling veterinarians and dog breeders paying tribute to the commercial pet food they feed their dog. Or perhaps, you’ve been convinced by your own vet that the food they sell is sure to be nutritionally balanced.

For your dog’s sake, be a bit suspicious. Don’t be convinced by anyone (including me) that what they are trying to sell you is necessarily in your dog’s best interest.

Instead, it may be in their own best interest if they gain a sale from convincing you.

If you’re having a problem getting your head around the idea of raw dog food, then I suggest it’s your problem, not your dog’s.

Dogs evolved on a diet of raw food over millennia. Humans have only recently taken an interest in making dog food.

Do you really imagine, for one moment, that humans have been able to change the domestic dog’s digestive and immune system in fifty odd years?

You may well say that humans have had an impact on the way dogs look, with all the different breeds. Yes, that’s true. But have you also noticed that pedigree dogs are also the most unhealthy? What I call a Heinz 57 dog, is normally much healthier.

So in breeding a selective type of dog, humans have gone against nature, by isolating one or more traits, until the breed becomes what the breeder wants.

And so it is with food. Humans tinker about with food, under the guise of ’science’. I call it junk science, because there’s nothing scientific about commercial dog food. The word ’science’ has come to be revered by the majority. Just as the word ‘natural’ is currently enjoying popularity.

So a clever commercial dog food manufacturer will incorporate the word ’science’ and/or ‘natural’ in the advertising, to lure you in.

That doesn’t mean there’s anything of quality within the packet or can It could be anything. You have no way of knowing how the food was prepared or what is in each pack.

Raw dog food, on the other hand, contains all the nutrients essential to a healthy dog.

I appreciate that it may take you time to get your head around the idea, because you’ve probably been brought up on the idea that commercial pet food is the healthiest way to go.

If that was true, how cum that dogs health invariably improves when a switch from commercial to raw dog food is made? The only way you’re really going to find out for sure is to try it out yourself.

You may be worried about parasites and bacteria in raw dog food.

Neither of these are an issue for dogs, whose digestive system is very robust, with powerful digestive juices. Dogs aren’t carnivores, they’re omnivores, which means they can eat anything (as long as it’s raw), including vegetation and rotting carcasses.

In fact, you will notice that when you feed a raw dog food, fleas and worms decrease and almost disappear.

Dogs have problems with unnatural foods – those that are cooked, those that contain preservatives. Neither of these are natural. Cooking destroys many vitamins and denatures other nutrients.

I can genuinely assure you, that your dogs health will improve considerably when you start feeding a raw dog food. There may be a ‘de-toxing’ period initially, but this is normal, natural and only takes a short time to go through.

Why not try it for a month and see for yourself? What have you got to lose?

dog food kidney failure

The functioning of our body depends a lot on the kidneys. Kidneys aid in the filtering blood by turning urea, metabolites and other substances into urine which is removed from our body. The kidneys regulates blood pressure, blood plasma volume and glucose of our body and also secretes hormones. For our well being, healthy kidneys are very crucial and to ensure renal health kidney cleansing is required.

We can make out if our kidneys are not working properly. A person who has kidney stones or a bladder infection would definitely understand this because of the agonising pain involved. The symptoms involved will let us know that we have a high quantity of protein in our blood which is leading to kidney stones formation or we have an infection from fungus or that we have consumed a large quantity of poisons and toxins. Auto-immune shortage like Lupus, Hepatitis B, and HIV are also accountable for a few kidney problems.

What is Renal Failure?

Two sorts of kidneys failures occur which are both deadly.

1.The first one is Acute Renal Failure (ARF) which happens when damaged kidneys result in rapid loss of renal function. ARF is caused by Diuretic use, sepsis, drug overdose, medicines such as NSAIDs and a number of antibiotics. ARF is reversible and fatal if it is not treated properly.

2. The second one is Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) and it is too known as chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD happens if the kidneys are not functioning to its best as they are supposed to. High blood pressure or diabetic nephropathy can lead to CRF and it is tested from stage 1 to stage 5. It is considered the last stage which will need a dialysis or a transplant and it is not enough to be diagnosed. There is a treatment but it can only slow down its advancement and it affects the quality of life.

Is a kidney cleanse of any good to me?

Our body cannot work without a healthy kidney so one should do anything it takes to maintain the system fit. One great way is to go for a kidney cleanse.

The main intention of a kidney cleanse is to cleanse the kidney tubules from foreign material that have accumulated and our body was powerless to eradicate them naturally.

The first thing you need to do is a proper healthy diet. You should keep away from food that is loaded in proteins such as meat, cheese and eggs. You have to keep yourself away from fried, fatty, greasy food, salt, caffeine, soda and sugar.

1. Raw fruits and vegetables have to be your main concern.

2. White flour for whole meal grains, breads and pastas are good for your health.

3. The other food products that are essential for you are papaya, banana, watermelon, asparagus, celery, cucumber, garlic and parsley.

dog food ingredients list
Did you know that Orijen dog food is actually NOT grain free?

How can a company market a dog food as GRAIN FREE when it is actually not? Orijen has deceivingly listed corn in the ingredients list as “zea mays“…how can that be legal? Corn is a grain.
Wow…thanks for the link to the FAQ…but, the reason I found out about this is because my friend`s dog is allergic to corn and had a major reaction to Orijen. So, I am not sure how they could say that there will be no reaction in dogs who are allergic.
One more thing…if you look up the definition of ZEA MAYS, it says GRAIN…so why would they not just say CORN SILK on the ingredients list, instead?

It isnt so much corn being in the food, it is about the ingredient being low quality. Knowing Orijen, the corn they use is high quality. It is a grain option, just like oatmeal or brown rice. As long as its high quality, then there is no need to worry unless you are feeding grain free for allergies or cancer.

Natural dog food brand with the TV advert with the dog that says “Tastes better than what was in there!”?

I saw an advert (UK television) for a new brand of natural dog food with a dog at the end that says “Tastes better than whatever was in there!” while looking at a bin, and throughout the advert plates of vegetables and meat are shown against the food (i.e. what’s in the food).

What is the brand?

It’s Pedigree better by nature.

I love that advert!

best dog food for boxers

Some dog breeds are more susceptible to allergies than others. This may be because of small nasal passages, allergic reactions to flea bites, irritable stomachs that make digesting food difficult, or they may be allergic to their own hair and dander. Dogs that have allergies include the following breeds: Bishon frise, terrier, retrievers, beagles, setters, and boxers. All dogs have the potential to be allergic to something, however.

The most common signs of allergies include raw skin where the dog has scratched, patches of hair missing, red skin, hives, coughing, sneezing, excessive chewing and licking of paws, watery eyes, vomiting, and diarrhea. While these symptoms may go away after a few days, you should monitor your dog’s behavior to see if the symptoms return. If they do, then you should take your dog to see a vet. Sometimes changing the type of dog food or buying a flea collar or spray is enough to help eliminate your dog’s allergy problems.

When a dog is suffering from allergies, their mood may change. They may become irritable, lethargic, clingy, or angry. Discipline will not work when the dog is having allergy issues. The best way to combat this problem is to learn how to care for your dog once you have isolated the cause of the allergies. This may mean keeping a journal of your dog’s activities and symptoms that you can show the vet, who will be able to recommend treatment.

Some smaller breeds may have breathing issues as they age, there is little that can be done except to keep their sleeping area clean, vacuum often, and consider buying a hepa filter that will trap dust, particles, and other air pollutants that are in the air. While it is important that all dogs get their exercise, when it is cold outside, keep small breeds indoors and play with them. This will keep them from getting head colds, which could make breathing even worse.

If you notice that your dog has fleas or that they have been bitten by fleas, you should bathe your dog using a shampoo that will kill fleas and their eggs. You may need to rid your home of fleas as well so that reinfestation does not occur. Buy carpet spray or if the problem is too big, then you may have to call an exterminator. Once the fleas are gone, you should spray your dog every time the dog goes outside. This will prevent new attacks from occurring. If the dog has open bites or wounds from scratching, you will have to wait for them to heal before using a spray or shampoo on your dog.

Vomiting can occur if your dog is allergic to the food it receives. You should first visit the vet to see if the problem isn’t internal. They may recommend a new food for the dog. This should stop the vomiting and diarrhea.

Dogs that are allergic to their own hair and dander have the worst allergies of all because there is little that can be done. You should make sure your dog is groomed regularly, brush your dog everyday to remove excess hair and dander, and bathe your dog once a month. Your vet may prescribe an anti-histamine if the allergies persist.

dog food for boxers

What’s on your mind when you consider an all natural dog food? Could it be a commercial dog food which has the word ‘natural’ on the packet? Could it be you think of cooking your own dog food from scratch? Do you consider table scraps to be the ideal diet?

Wrong! None of the above will address your dog’s health, Why not?

Well, the commercial dog food starts off with very low grade meat, mostly meat by-products (the better quality going for the higher priced human food), high fat and sometimes euthanased animals, which contain the chemical sodium pentobarbital. Then, to bulk out the already cheap ‘meat’, a non-nutritional filler is added. That can be sugar, as there’s a world glut of it at the moment, or melamine if you live in China.

Then, to keep the product indefinitely at room temperature a preservative is added.

When you see a packet of dried dog food in the shop, with the slogan ‘preservative free’ ask yourself this question – how can dried ‘meat’ be kept indefinitely at room temperature without preservatives? Do you think you wouldn’t have heard of a new way to do this, if there was?

So either there is no ‘meat’ or there is preservative present. Trouble is, the preservatives used are very strong, cause huge health problems and aren’t allowed in human food.

So commercial dog food can be crossed off as an all natural dog food!.

I see quite a lot of ‘dog experts’ on the internet advocating you cook your own dog food. Whilst that is hugely better than commercial pet food, it’s still missing the nutrients that are lost in cooking. Typically these are vitamins and enzymes, both essential for a healthy dog. But other nutrients are altered by cooking. Fat changes during the cooking process from a beneficial food to a harmful one.

So you can cross though this one too, as an all natural dog food.

What about table scraps? That depends so much on the table scraps. If the human food is a good, natural one of lots of raw fruit and veg, with lightly cooked meat, then these table scraps have the potential of being the best dog food out of all three options, as long as there is enough left over to satisfy your dog’s nutritional needs.

If, however, your diet is typically fast food with a lot of processed food, then these table scraps will be little better than the commercial dog food.

Yet another cross through.

There is only one all natural dog food and that’s the one dogs evolved on. Nothing that mankind has done has improved one iota on that. And considerable decline has occurred.

Dogs have evolved over millions of years on an all natural dog food and it keeps them happy and healthy.

Once you get to grips with the idea of how dogs evolved, duplicating that diet within the constraints of what is available and the limits on your time, is not that difficult. However, there are a few important things you need to know such as:

what food should not be given more than once a week should bones be given what carbohydrates are the best ones and how much are there any fruit or vegetables that shouldn’t be given what amino acid is essential to a dog’s healthy skin should you supplement the diet how do you convert the diet of an elderly or sick dog safely.

When you change the diet of your dog from a commercial pet food to an all natural dog food, there may initially be a de-toxing period. This is normal and natural, but can seem a bit scary to you if you don’t understand why it’s happening and the symptoms. It should be of short duration, depending on your dog’s age and level of health.

Dogs digestion is robust. They have evolved on eating raw meat and carrion. They can’t cope with preservatives, fillers, high fat or low grade protein, none of which occurs (at least in high proportions) in nature.

Once you have your dog on an all natural dog food, you’ll find fewer and fewer health problems. I’m sure you’d be as happy as anyone, to cut your dog’s professional health fees.
