dog health symptoms
i need help with my dogs health?

My dog is an outdoor dog, the is a labrador retriever. We put skin so soft on her to keep the bugs off but it hasn’t worked very well with all the flooding and extra mosquitoes. She has many bug bites that have swelled up. What can i do to easy the pain of the mosquitoes bites and keep all the other diseases they carry from hurting her. I give her her heart worm pill every month. Is there anything i should be concerned about otherwise? If so what are the symptoms.

There is nothing to worry about if you already give her heartworm pills.
Use a different bug repellent. Skin so-soft isn’t that good at keeping bugs off.
The kind that is marketed towards hunters and fisherman is the best kind to get for your dog.
Where I’m from, its called “Deep Woods Off”, but any other similar type will be good.
The higher percentage of “DEET the better.

dog health eye problems
Problems with my dogs health…Worried…?

I recently had taken my dog to a vet because i noticed a change in her attitude lately. Her face has also drooped down on the right side and swollen slightly. Her right eye no longer closes even when she sleeps.

The Vet told me that it could be a couple possible things. She said that it could be a brain tumor, seizures, or from head trauma. She has never been abused in my household but i had taken her to a kennel for a night not too long ago.

Her attitude seems fine now and shes the same old dog but im worried and i dont know what to do. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for what else to do or experiences with something like this.

Thank you for your help.

I’ve never seen a dog that’s had a stroke, but I know it can happen. Did they exclude that?

dog health records
How important is predictability to you when you are purchasing a puppy?

As in… how important is it to you that you are able to meet the puppy’s sire and dam and see where your puppy’s temperament will generate from, view health records and genetic testing results, etc?

Or, does that not matter to you and you are willing to roll the dice with a dog from a shelter?

(Yes, I know not *all* shelter dogs fit in that category, just as all dogs from a breeder don’t fit in the category above. I am speaking generally.)

Since I’ve only gotten dogs from reputable breeders(or bred my own 100% purebred registered & titled animals),I don’t need to meet/see the sire & dam;I know what the breeders produce. I know the pedigrees. I know they can judge/grade/select correctly to suit me. *&* that if it isn’t right, there’s no problem returning the dog.
As is the reverse, the breeders can get a dog from me w/confidence.

I am not & never will be interested in any sort of mutt/mongrel. My stock must be quality, purebred & “bred-to-the-standard”.

dog cancer bone
bone cancer in greyhounds?

So I want to adopt an ex-racer but I keep hearing all of these horror stories. People adopt them and within a year or two the dogs get bone cancer and die.

So is it very common for these dogs to get bone cancer? If so, I will not bother getting one. I want a dog that will live a long time not just 2 or 3 years.

I’ve had my greys for almost 7 years and guess what?!?! – no signs of cancer!!! Out of the dozens and dozens of greys I’ve gotten to know over the years, there’s been 1 who’s gotten cancer and she was 10 when she got it.

But if you don’t want to risk adopting a dog who might get sick, you’re absolutely right – don’t bother.

dog health insurance
Is it worth getting life insurance for my dog?

My dog is 4 years old and she is a Rot/Lab. She is pretty healthy I’d say with all treatments done to her and eating healthy and exercising. She recently had some leg pain but it looks to be getting better. I’m considering to buy some sort of health insurance that would cover my dogs fees at the Vet such as Check Ups, Xrays, Surgeries, and so on. Is there anything that you can recommend. Maybe something you have at an affordable rate like $30/month?
Okay I understand where that one lady is coming from, but I really think they got you sucked in. No offense, but how many times would you have to take your dog to the vet? How do you know what they’re giving your dog is really needed? They just do it just because they want to bill the insurance company for doing “all of this” for something that they have spent 5 minutes on.

my husband and I pay about $20 a month for our dog to be on one of those Banfeild wellness plans (Banfeild being the vet clinic associated with PetSmart stores across the country)

I’m very picky about who I allow to care for my baby- I met the vet in charge and I love her, she seems like she really cares!

we pay $20 a month and in the end we pay alot less than we normally would for his vet care

last month we noticed he had tapeworms
took him in to vet
they took a fecal sample, tested it, gave him some injections of medication
the overall fees would have been $460,
but because of the wellness plan, we only paid $47

the vet requested to see him again in two weeks to make sure the worms were gone, we brought him in two weeks later
an exam that would have cost us $98, we paid nothing

then today he had his yearly dental cleaning (because he has gum disease), they ended up needing to give him some medication underneath his gum line
the procedure and medications would have cost us $924
we only paid $86

the difference his incredible!
all of his vaccinations (rabies, distemper, parvo, etc..) are all free with the wellness plan
plus if he wasn’t already microchipped and neutered, then that would have been included
plus a yearly dental cleaning
plus we can take him in for a check up anytime we notice something off, we don’t have to pay the $30 office fee
and many of the emergency care we might need is covered, should we get into an accident

I strongly suggest everyone get some sort of health plan for their pets- it makes a world of difference in cost!
and if you really want to keep your baby alive as long as possible, then you need the best medical care possible

*edit*
I’m sure that he needs all the services that he recieves-
I’ve been working with dogs for 17 years now, as a a groomer and as a co-director of a local humane society.
And currently I’m in my first year of school to become a vet tech.
My dog is elderly, and did not recieve proper veterinary care his first 7 years of life. This is why he needs a bit more medical attention than the average dog may need.

dog cancer medicine
Holistic approach for ur dog? (anyone give FLAXOIL to their dog)?

Does anyone here use any type of holistic approach for the dog? My dog just got diagnosed with cancer yesterday (found a big tumor in his heart)….I wanna try to do everythikng I can. Surgery is not an option the vet said. Ive heard putting a tablespoon of flaxoil with some cottage cheese in the meal helps. Anyone do this for their dog??? Any other natural herbs or medicine that you use to help your dog heal? I would truly appreciate any advice I can get. I am desperate….It is killing me watching my dog die…or knowing that he might not have much left to live. =(***
