dog health insurance
Is it worth getting life insurance for my dog?

My dog is 4 years old and she is a Rot/Lab. She is pretty healthy I’d say with all treatments done to her and eating healthy and exercising. She recently had some leg pain but it looks to be getting better. I’m considering to buy some sort of health insurance that would cover my dogs fees at the Vet such as Check Ups, Xrays, Surgeries, and so on. Is there anything that you can recommend. Maybe something you have at an affordable rate like $30/month?
Okay I understand where that one lady is coming from, but I really think they got you sucked in. No offense, but how many times would you have to take your dog to the vet? How do you know what they’re giving your dog is really needed? They just do it just because they want to bill the insurance company for doing “all of this” for something that they have spent 5 minutes on.

my husband and I pay about $20 a month for our dog to be on one of those Banfeild wellness plans (Banfeild being the vet clinic associated with PetSmart stores across the country)

I’m very picky about who I allow to care for my baby- I met the vet in charge and I love her, she seems like she really cares!

we pay $20 a month and in the end we pay alot less than we normally would for his vet care

last month we noticed he had tapeworms
took him in to vet
they took a fecal sample, tested it, gave him some injections of medication
the overall fees would have been $460,
but because of the wellness plan, we only paid $47

the vet requested to see him again in two weeks to make sure the worms were gone, we brought him in two weeks later
an exam that would have cost us $98, we paid nothing

then today he had his yearly dental cleaning (because he has gum disease), they ended up needing to give him some medication underneath his gum line
the procedure and medications would have cost us $924
we only paid $86

the difference his incredible!
all of his vaccinations (rabies, distemper, parvo, etc..) are all free with the wellness plan
plus if he wasn’t already microchipped and neutered, then that would have been included
plus a yearly dental cleaning
plus we can take him in for a check up anytime we notice something off, we don’t have to pay the $30 office fee
and many of the emergency care we might need is covered, should we get into an accident

I strongly suggest everyone get some sort of health plan for their pets- it makes a world of difference in cost!
and if you really want to keep your baby alive as long as possible, then you need the best medical care possible

*edit*
I’m sure that he needs all the services that he recieves-
I’ve been working with dogs for 17 years now, as a a groomer and as a co-director of a local humane society.
And currently I’m in my first year of school to become a vet tech.
My dog is elderly, and did not recieve proper veterinary care his first 7 years of life. This is why he needs a bit more medical attention than the average dog may need.

dog health questions answered
Anyone know anything about these dog breeds?

We are getting a dog soon and would like you to answer these questions about english cocker spaniels, english springer spaniels, and welsh springer spaniels. Please answer 1a for the cocker, 1b for the welsh springer and 1c for the english springer.

1. Are they good with children?
2. Relitavely good with small pets?
3. Any common health problems?
4. Can handle a slightly (not very) cold climate in Sligo, Rep of Ireland?
5. Need to be fed a specific diet?
6. And lastly, know any good names for spaniels, male or female?

Thanks everyone who is looking at, and maybe answering this question. Please speak from personal experience if you have any.

Though I have never owned these particular breeds, I have some experience with sporting breeds in general however.

All are good with children. The extent to which they are good with small pets depends on the type of pets and the dog’s exposure to them early on. If raised with small dogs or cats early on, it can be fine with any of these breeds. I am always concerned when a household has rabbits, chickens, or rodents, since a high prey drive individual of any of these breeds are liable to chase and kill these types of animals if the opportunity arises. The springers given their size and use as game dogs may have this prey drive more than the cocker.

My experience is that springer’s (either breed) bark much less than cockers.

No special diet is needed for any of them – as long as they are fed a high quality food to begin with. Cockers sometimes have a tendency toward allergies – have not seen the problem as often with springer’s.

All should be able to handle your climate. They were bred to be game dogs and work in the field during the day and be inside with their masters at night.

One thing to keep in mind is the exercise requirements of the springers will be higher than that of the cocker.

How To Identify Dog Health Problems

dog health thyroid

Many dog owners refer to their fat dogs as cute and cuddlesome. Fat dogs are often mistaken as healthy canines without realizing that obesity is a serious problem, which needs immediate attention.

Dogs tend to lose weight more easily than gaining it, by skipping, leaping, hopping and playing. Despite this fact, roughly 25% pet dogs brought to vets are overweight. This brings us to the conclusion that it is often a wrong dietary pattern, which is the root of this disorder. The causes may also include some genetic inclination or improper functioning of certain hormones secreted by the thyroid and pituitary glands.

Obesity requires serious thought and treatment, especially when it comes to dogs. Dog breeds like Labrador, Dachshund, Beagle and Spaniels are usually at more risk for obesity.

Fat dogs are prone to innumerable disorders such as nervous tension and pressure on the bones, liver, lungs, kidneys and heart. They are likely to be lethargic and less resistant to other diseases. It also hinders normal functioning of the respiratory and reproductive processes.

Treatment:

The key solution to decreasing obesity in your pet is to increase its level of activity. It is equally vital to note the factors for its obesity, and carry out a proper exercise schedule with the vets advice. This includes taking it for a regular walk and involving games that will enable it to burn its calories.

Prepare a dietary plan that suits the dogs energy needs and accordingly switch to a dog food product, which ensures comparatively less calorie and more fiber intake. Thus instead of supplying high-calorie and low-nutrition items such as cakes, buttered sandwiches or cookies, it is better to give slices of carrots, bananas or oranges.

Your vet can assist you in determining the best dog food for your dog. There are many dog foods on the market and many of them are specifically developed for weight control. Your dogs age and other health issues should be considered when choosing the dog food. Dry dog food is best for their teeth.

Dog owners enjoy giving their dogs treats. Keep their diet in mind when giving treats to your dog. Instead of feeding them table scraps from the table, give them a dog treat that takes them awhile to eat, such as a milk bone.

The owner needs to follow many other habits along with these measures. It is also essential to keep a continuous watch on your dog to keep it away from garbage cans and areas where your dog may eat unhealthy and unsanitary items.

Dog owners should view obesity in their pets as an indicator of the dogs health. Determine appropriate portions for your dogs size and age in order to avoid overfeeding. Instances of overfeeding often occur because the owners yield to their pets wishes. They give it what it likes, instead of giving it what it needs.

It is the vet who can brief the owner correctly regarding their pets needs and provide a suitable solution to deal with fat dogs. It is therefore, important that the owner make correct choices and implement them with the aid and advice of a good vet.

If you are a pug owner, then you may not be aware that there are some major health issues you should be looking for. While pugs are, for the most part, healthy companions, there are a few pug health problems you need to know about.

Just like any dog breed, there are certain problems that this breed is prone to. It is best to be proactive when it comes to dealing with the potential health problems of your pets, so inquire about the history of the pug you want to purchase because there may be some genetic health problems.

When it comes to pug dog health, there are some minor and major problems. You may find that one of the most common types of disease for the pug breed would be Encephalitis. This is disease settles in the brain and becomes inflammatory.

While you might be aware of hip dysplasia problems in large breed dogs, are you aware it can occur in a pug? The disease is very painful for your pet and can cause them to have stress.

You will also need to make sure they don’t get tracheal collapse, which is one of the serious problems that you need to watch out for. There is a danger of suffocation due to the narrowing of the windpipe. One of the main symptoms of this potentially deadly disease is coughing during either cold weather or hot weather. When you hear a gagging noise or a goose honk when they cough, you need vet attention for your pug. This health issue can be resolved fairly soon as long as you get your pug to a vet in time.

When it comes to good pug health you want to take no chances! Have your veterinarian give your pug a once over so they can help you diagnose any pug health problems you may not be aware of. The old adage is true: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, especially when dealing with a loved member of your family!

dog food urinary tract

Owning a pet is the greatest thing in the world because you have something that will listen to you and won’t pass judgment and your pet can be your best friend in the whole world so you don’t want to see anything happen to your pet. Dogs have been around for a lot of years and are known to be mans best friend. There are many things a dog can do for you when compared to other animals that you can have for pets. If you own a dog then you have to worry about UTI (urinary tract infection). Dogs are one of the most loyal and best friends you can have so you want to make sure that your dog is healthy.

Every dog has its share of illnesses and no dog is safe if there are bugs in the air. You want to make sure your dog is taken care of and that your dog is as healthy as it can be so any sign of illness, you want to take your dog to your local vet to make sure the sickness can be treated as soon as you know something or that your dog is acting weird. The vet can give your dog the medicine that you need to give to your dog so that your pet can get better and return to its normal activities.

UTI disease can be painful for dogs just like it is for us humans so you want to make sure that if you notice the warning signs of the UTI in dogs, you get your dog to the vet so that you can get the medication that your dog needs in order to get better so that your dog can be healthy and resume its normal activities. UTI in dogs is a very serious disease and about 14% of all dogs across the world have this disease but it can be cured if you bring your dog to the vet to get the medication you need to get better.

UTI occurs when bacteria begins to take over the immune system in your dog. Your dog can get the bacteria from bad food or tainted water. Once the bacteria get into your dogs system, it goes to work and is transmitted through the blood. If these bacteria are not flushed out of your dog’s system, UTI can occur and can become more and more dangerous for your dog’s health.

Female dogs are more likely to develop urinary tract infection than male dogs because the length of the female’s urethra is shorter than the males. Since the urethra is shorter in the female dogs, it is easier for the bacteria to find its way to the bladder as well as other internal systems easier than the males.

Which shots does my dog need to get yearly?? Also Insurance Question.. Help?

Ok, so I’m getting my dog insurance, he’s a 1 yr old bichon frise who is in good health.. I will be paying $136 a year for a standard plan, which will cover Accidents, Illnesses, X-Rays,surgeries, cancer, prescription, & hospitalization.. To me that seems pretty good, but the only thing it doesn’t cover is vaccinations, heart worming, & flea control… In order to get my plan to cover these as well I would have to pay $280 a year, compared to $136.. So do you think it would be worth it just to pay that much more for those things?? give me your insight..
Also, which shots does my dog need to have taken every year, can’t remember right now, and vets closed, so I was just wondering…

BTW He’s already been neutered, and had all his puppy shots.

THANKS

No, paying the $280 a year vs $136 is NOT worth it. You can find flea control products online at a discount. Heartworm medication can also be bought online if your vet will give you a prescription. You can save a lot by doing it online. Vaccinations…..well, once your pup has all his vaccinations, he will need one more a year from his last puppy shot and then not for 3 years. This is the new standard adopted by all the vet schools in the country. And, vaccinations are cheap anyway.

How to help and itchy dog and eliminating dog tear stains

Having an itchy dog can be very frustrating, not only because you know your pet is in pain but also because you don’t know exactly how to help him or her. This article will discuss what the causes of a dog itching usually are and how to cure the problem with dog enzymes and dog anti itch remedies. We will also briefly discuss dog tear stain remover to deal with staining under dogs eyes.

So let’s start with the most common reason dogs experience any number of health related issues to include dog itching – nutrition. The interesting part here is that this goes beyond what we feed a dog; it also deals with the dogs ability to digest food and absorb the nutrients in it. Let me elaborate: dogs comes from the wild and accordingly have digestive systems meant to digest raw (and sometimes spoiled) meat from animals as well as other things found in nature. There digestive systems are not designed for processed food, which is what almost all dog food is. For many dogs this is no problem at all as their digestive systems adopt to absorb the needed nutrients from the food we provide them.

There are however many, many dogs that are unable to digest pet food properly. This will cause dog dry itchy skin, as well as many other issues such as dog shedding, digestive problems, dog allergies, hot spots on dogs, lack of energy, mood disorders, etc…

By adding dog enzymes to the dogs diet has been the solution for hundreds of thousands of dog owners. The enzymes, which are living bacteria (which humans and dogs have in their stomach naturally), act as a catalyst, or booster, to aid in their natural digestion. The best part about these enzymes for dogs is that it is all natural as these enzymes occur naturally in dogs digestive systems. The problem is that with processed food they are unable to produce enough. Always use a high quality dog enzyme that is not a meat product. We offer great enzymes for dogs at Evolution Pet Supply that has been used successfully by many pet owners looking to help their dog like you.

Next, I’ll address the issue of Tear Stains as we’ve had many questions on this subject lately. Small dog such as Poodles, Bichon, and Maltese are prone to dog tear stains.

The trick to permanently remove these dog tear stains is to use a quality dog tear stain remover that contains Tylosin. We have a great dog tear stain remover at evolutionsupply.com which has had just great success. This type of tear stain remover attacks the root of the problem; it does not simply mask the issue as many removers do. All you have to do is sprinkle a small amount of the tear stain remover over your dogs food.

Lastly, I’d like to quickly get back to an itchy dog. While enzymes work great there are other reason for dog itch. Some are as simple as bites, rashes, dry skin. In these cases use a good quality oatmeal dog shampoo for dogs and may I also suggest a dog dandruff shampoo with zinc-pca. This type of shampoo work great to eliminate dog dry skin issues and moisturize the skin very nicely. Again we see great resuts with these solutions. For immediate relief use a dog anti itch spray with neem oil and aloe; trust us it works nicely.

We hope we answered some of your questions, if you have any other questions please email me at Bill@evolutionsupply.com
