dog health symptoms
i need help with my dogs health?

My dog is an outdoor dog, the is a labrador retriever. We put skin so soft on her to keep the bugs off but it hasn’t worked very well with all the flooding and extra mosquitoes. She has many bug bites that have swelled up. What can i do to easy the pain of the mosquitoes bites and keep all the other diseases they carry from hurting her. I give her her heart worm pill every month. Is there anything i should be concerned about otherwise? If so what are the symptoms.

There is nothing to worry about if you already give her heartworm pills.
Use a different bug repellent. Skin so-soft isn’t that good at keeping bugs off.
The kind that is marketed towards hunters and fisherman is the best kind to get for your dog.
Where I’m from, its called “Deep Woods Off”, but any other similar type will be good.
The higher percentage of “DEET the better.

dog health vet

Dog pancreatitis begins for unknown reasons and quickly becomes a worrying and uncomfortable illness for your dog that can also be very damaging to the dog’s body and vital organs. To rectify this condition though may take constant observations and medication for a period of time from the vet. Despite this, the condition will be curable easily.

In this article we will first look at why dog pancreatitis happens and some common theories about what causes the condition, and then we will look at what can be done to renew your dog’s health and help your dog return to its normal happy condition in the shortest time.

To begin with this condition may make your dog noticeably unwilling to eat, bouts of severe vomiting or sickness, and generally feeling unwell and pain around stomach and surrounding areas when touched or moved.

The pancreas (the area in which this condition effects) is situated at the top of the upper intestines/ bottom of the stomach. One of the many functions of the pancreas is to begin to break down the food that travels through into the intestines by releasing enzymes so the food can be digested properly and easily.

Pancreatitis then happens when for some reason the pancreas becomes inflamed and over sized in a short period of time and too many of the enzymes are released into the correct area and the surrounding area which then breaks down the tissue cells and pancreas cells causing further inflammation. This then turns into a vicious cycle because the over sized pancreas is causing itself to become further inflamed and causing the dog more pain.

When you suspect this condition you should inform your vet straight away where they will then normally begin to take many different tests on your dog including X-rays, ultrasounds and blood tests before confirming that dog pancreatitis is the condition affecting your canine. From here the vet will probably stop the dogs food and drink consumption so that the pancreas will stop making the dangerous enzymes and the inflammation will go down and it can return to its normal size and create the correct amount of enzymes again. Until this process has time to return to normal though the dog will have to be on an intravenous drip so the dog can still get its nutrition and foods to live.

After this your dog should return to its normal self again and no further damage will have been done. Please note this is not a diagnosis of your dog and many other conditions may be associated with the symptoms you are seeing, to get a proper diagnosis please contact your vet as soon as you suspect any problems with your dog.

Active dogs, like herding, sporting and working breeds, need more exercise than a walk can provide. Some owners of such dog breeds take their pets with them when they jog. This offers good exercise for the dog, but has to be done safely.

To begin with, first bring your dog to a veterinarian for a complete checkup to ensure that the dog is healthy. Dogs may appear healthy on the outside, when in fact they may sometimes have physical problems that you may not be aware of. Elbow or hip dysplasia, for instance, may worsen with strenuous exercise, and younger and older dogs may get injured from all the running. A thorough checkup will make sure whether your dog’s all right and fit to jog.

Next, refresh your dog’s memory with regards to obedience training. Make sure the dog will walk and jog only at your side. Don’t let him pull on the leash by running ahead, as it will give him sore neck and shoulder muscles, in addition to making the jog stressful instead of enjoyable for you. If you let him pull at the leash, you’ll end up having straining yourself and suffer less control over your dog. Make sure the dog runs on your side in a nice heel position, with neck and shoulders by your leg. If you have a hard time teaching your dog this position, ask help from an obedience instructor.

Start the jog gradually, especially if either you or your dog is a couch potato. Too much exercise too soon will result in sore muscles for both of you. Initially, you may alternate walking and jogging – Jog one block, walk the next, then jog the one after. Maintain a slower speed and shorter distance until you and your dog are comfortable with both, then gradually increase the distance in subsequent jogs.

It’s safer to jog on softer surfaces than on concrete, because repeated jarring on concrete can damage bones and joints. Asphalt is a much better jogging surface – just don’t jog on asphalt baked under the sun, or your dog would much rather stay home. In general, grass and sand is also a good surface to run on for both of you. Just watch out for ruts or holes to prevent both of you from tripping and hurting yourselves.

After jogging, look at your dog’s paws. See if his foot pads become cut, scraped, burned, or bruised during the jog. Such injuries heal on their own fairly quickly, but you still need to keep his foot pads clean and dry, as well as let your dog stay home until they heal. If walking is painful for your dog and his foot pads are visibly cut or badly burned, take him to his veterinarian.

Jogging constitutes a great cardiovascular workout for you and your dog. It builds stamina, strengthens resistance against illness, and relieves accumulated stress (yours from work, his from boredom). Once you find a good, safe route to run, your dog will be begging to tag along when he sees you put on those running shoes.

dog health insurance
Is it worth getting life insurance for my dog?

My dog is 4 years old and she is a Rot/Lab. She is pretty healthy I’d say with all treatments done to her and eating healthy and exercising. She recently had some leg pain but it looks to be getting better. I’m considering to buy some sort of health insurance that would cover my dogs fees at the Vet such as Check Ups, Xrays, Surgeries, and so on. Is there anything that you can recommend. Maybe something you have at an affordable rate like $30/month?
Okay I understand where that one lady is coming from, but I really think they got you sucked in. No offense, but how many times would you have to take your dog to the vet? How do you know what they’re giving your dog is really needed? They just do it just because they want to bill the insurance company for doing “all of this” for something that they have spent 5 minutes on.

my husband and I pay about $20 a month for our dog to be on one of those Banfeild wellness plans (Banfeild being the vet clinic associated with PetSmart stores across the country)

I’m very picky about who I allow to care for my baby- I met the vet in charge and I love her, she seems like she really cares!

we pay $20 a month and in the end we pay alot less than we normally would for his vet care

last month we noticed he had tapeworms
took him in to vet
they took a fecal sample, tested it, gave him some injections of medication
the overall fees would have been $460,
but because of the wellness plan, we only paid $47

the vet requested to see him again in two weeks to make sure the worms were gone, we brought him in two weeks later
an exam that would have cost us $98, we paid nothing

then today he had his yearly dental cleaning (because he has gum disease), they ended up needing to give him some medication underneath his gum line
the procedure and medications would have cost us $924
we only paid $86

the difference his incredible!
all of his vaccinations (rabies, distemper, parvo, etc..) are all free with the wellness plan
plus if he wasn’t already microchipped and neutered, then that would have been included
plus a yearly dental cleaning
plus we can take him in for a check up anytime we notice something off, we don’t have to pay the $30 office fee
and many of the emergency care we might need is covered, should we get into an accident

I strongly suggest everyone get some sort of health plan for their pets- it makes a world of difference in cost!
and if you really want to keep your baby alive as long as possible, then you need the best medical care possible

*edit*
I’m sure that he needs all the services that he recieves-
I’ve been working with dogs for 17 years now, as a a groomer and as a co-director of a local humane society.
And currently I’m in my first year of school to become a vet tech.
My dog is elderly, and did not recieve proper veterinary care his first 7 years of life. This is why he needs a bit more medical attention than the average dog may need.

dog health fleas

Fleas are insects that infect pets like dogs or cats and even entire homes periodically. This bugs feed on the blood of the host and they can irritate the skin of the pet. Also some pets are allergic to fleas. Fleas are the most common cause of skin conditions found in dogs. If you see your dog scratching and chewing parts of his body you should check him for fleas.
If you think that fleas are just irritant bugs, like mosquitoes think again. Dogs can develop balding, skin rashes, skin allergies, dermatitis and other infections like worms if the pet isn’t treated accordingly. Flea bites allergy is a very common condition that makes the dog to scratch continuously. As the scratching doesn’t offer enough itch relief the dog will start to bite his skin and to tear off small pieces of hair. As the itching gets more and more intense the dog may become extremely irritated and sensitive to any disturbance. In this condition if you try only to play with him or pet him he might become aggressive and bite any person around him. No one wants that from his own dog so you may want to treat him of fleas. Fleas are everywhere and are spread by other animals like wild animals or homeless animals. If your dog runs free around the yard or in the park this treatment may be difficult. It’s quite hard to eliminate all the fleas from the park or your own yard so we need a different approach. We need to eliminate first the fleas from you home and from your dog.
In our days there are many products that can do this job for you. There were invented flea collars, flea spays or flea soaps to bathe your dog with. There are also products that are administered orally and that protect your dog for around a year. If you own more than one pet, dogs or cats, you should apply a flea treatment to all of them at the same time. This is necessary so that the fleas will not be able to run and hide on your other pets. Your pets are not the only ones that need to be treated. You home needs treatment too. Fleas can hide in the carpets, bedding and other soft materials, chairs, and other pieces of furniture. Then they seek the next victim that can be any member of your family. How to clean out your home? It’s simple. Take all the pieces of furniture, beddings and carpets outside the house and shake them out very aggressively. After spray the surfaces with a flea repellent. If the object can be washed, wash it. This is an even better solution. You should spray with a flea repellent any surfaces where you dog likes to hang out.
For the best results you should follow strictly the directions from flea treatment products. You’ll have to be patient as fleas are not going to give up so easily. It will be needed a couple of treatments before all the fleas are gone. And once gone you should expect them to be back. It is important to maintain monthly or weekly spraying during the summer and worm months as fleas reproduce best during these months.
If you are not sure what kind of products you should use for your pets consult your veterinarian as soon as possible and start a monthly treatment to save your pet the irritations caused by fleas.

We all have questions and concerns about our pets. This article is about cancer in dogs and hopefully answers any pet health questions you may have.

1. Skin – Skin tumors are very common in older dogs, but much less common in cats. Most skin tumors in cats are malignant, but in dogs they are often benign. All skin tumors should be examined by your veterinarian.

2. Breast – Fifty percent of all breast tumors in dogs and 85% of all breast tumors in cats are malignant. Spaying your pet between 6 and 12 months of age will greatly reduce the risk of breast cancer. Surgery is the treatment of choice for this type of cancer.

3. Head & Neck – Cancer of the mouth is common in dogs and less common in cats. A mass on the gums, bleeding, odor, or difficult eating are signs to watch for. Many swellings are malignant, so early aggressive treatment is essential. Cancer may develop inside the nose of both cats and dogs. Bleeding from the nose, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling may occur.

4. Lymphoma – Lymphoma is a common form of cancer in dogs and cats. It is characterized by enlargement of one or many lymph nodes in the body. A virus causes most of these cancers in cats. Chemotherapy is frequently effective in controlling this type of cancer.

5. Feline Leukemia Complex – The feline leukemia virus is contagious among cats and will occasionally cause true cancer. There is no proof that it is contagious to humans. While a great deal of research is ongoing, no consistently effective treatment is presently available for virus-positive cats.

6. Testicles – Testicular tumors are rare in cats and common in dogs, especially those with retained testes. Most of these cancers are curable with surgery.

7. Abdominal Tumors – Tumors inside the abdomen are common. It is difficult to make an early diagnosis. Weight loss and abdominal enlargement are common signs of these tumors.

8. Bone – Bone tumors are most commonly seen in large breed dogs and rarely in cats. The leg bones, near joints, are the most common sites. Persistent lameness and swelling of the leg is an early sign of disease.

Common Signs of Cancer in Pets

* Abnormal swellings that persist or continue to grow
* Sores that do not heal
* Weight loss
* Loss of appetite
* Bleeding or discharge from any body opening
* Offensive odor
* Difficulty eating or swallowing
* Hesitance to exercise or loss of stamina
* Persistent lameness or stiffness
* Difficulty breathing, urinating, or defecating

Many of the above signs are also seen with noncancerous conditions but still warrant prompt attention by your veterinarian to determine the cause. Cancer is frequently treatable, and early diagnosis will aid your veterinarian in delivering the best care possible.

Each cancer requires individual care. Your veterinarian may use surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, cryosurgery (freezing), hyperthermia (heating) or immunotherapy to effectively treat cancers. Combination therapy is commonly employed.

What is the Success Rate?
This depends strongly on the type and extent of the cancer as well as the aggressiveness of therapy. Some cancers can be cured, and almost all patients can be helped to some degree. Your veterinarian will have a better chance to control or cure your pet’s cancer if it is detected early.
