dog food to gain weight
How can I make my dog gain weight?

I feed my dog twice a day and buy good food for him, but for some reason he is not gaining weight. He is not sick he is healthy. Any ideas on how can I make him gain weight or what food is good for weight gain?

The first thing to to is go to the vet and have them run a complete blood panel and screen for parasites.

If all that comes back clear and your veterinarian agrees that your dog needs to gain weight (most people’s pets carry too much weight) then you can use a food labeled for “performance” or “puppy” that has a higher fat content to what you are feeding. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Good Luck!

With the recent pet food recall anxiety, let’s make an effort to prepare home cooked food for our pets. By preparing nutritious wholesome home cooked meals for our pets, we know EXACTLY what goes into their body. We are able to control dog food intake and most importantly, allow us more happy waggy years with our animal friends. So, make the commitment today to be your doggie’s favourite chef!

Herein are some tips on selecting food sources for your pet when preparing home cooked pet food. Put this in your shopping bag and refer to the list when shopping for your home made dog food. This is to ensure we do not accidentally add on food sources not appropriate for pets that could jeopardize their health.

Shopping list on foods to AVOID for your Dog:

Corn, Soy, Sesame, Sunflower oils:

Avoid using all commercial brands of polyunsaturated vegetable oils as they are chemically unstable resulting in toxic compounds that can damage DNA and cell membranes, promoting cancer, inflammation, and degenerative changes in tissue.

Soy:

Dogs with allergy to soy may find their dogs with itchy, flaky skin and a dull coat and may cause bloat in dogs as it is also a gas producing product.

Dairy Products

Examples of daily products are butter, cream, milk : these are high in fat and cause dogs to be unhealthily overweight. Dogs who are lactose intolerant can also get severe diarrhea.

Pork:

Some dogs are prone to allergic reaction from pork. But if your dog reacts well with it, it is ok to include in their diet but they must be well cooked to kill all microorganisms which may be harmful to them.

Sugar:

Sugar is one of the primary trigger of excessive shedding, weight problems, diabetic conditions and behavioural problems in dogs. Excessive amounts can also lead to obesity and dental problems.

Salt:

Can cause kidney problems and causes dogs to shed excessively and may lead to electrolyte imbalance. The only salt I feel is safe enough to add just a little before feeding is sea salt. Sea salt has lot of natural minerals which are good for your pet. Just sprinkle a little will do for taste and health

Nuts:

Some dogs have allergies to nuts. Also, nuts are generally bad for dogs as their high phosphorus content is said to possibly lead to bladder stones, especially walnuts. They are poisonous to dogs and at all accounts should be avoided.

Peanut Butter / Peanuts:

These are high in fat and can cause allergies in dogs.

Onions:

These can cause anaemia in dogs.

Bacon or bacon bits:

These are high in salt and fat.

Tuna:

Tuna contains mercury which is harmful to dogs. Unless we are sure of the source of fish. Otherwise, ensure continuous supplmentation to boost your pet’s natural immune system to rid the toxins.

Raisins and grapes :

Are toxic to dogs!! They contain a toxin, which can damage the kidneys. Symptoms can include gastrointestinal signs like vomiting and diarrhea to life-threatening kidney failure which starts about 24 hours after ingestion. The amount of grapes ingested in these cases varied between 9 oz. and 2 lbs., which worked out to be between 0.41 and 1.1 oz/kg of body weight.

Night shade vegetables (e.g. tomatoes) : They are known to be toxic to dogs. This vegetable contains atropine, which can cause dilated pupils, tremors, and heart arrhythmias.

dog food commercial white dog

Busy people generally tend to shy away from home prepared food for themselves as well as their dogs. But relying on others for your and your dog’s nutritional needs is likely to ensure your dog’s health will suffer, if not your own.

What it really boils down to, is time. You think preparing homemade dog food is not time efficient, perhaps messy, and how can you be sure it’s healthy? Don’t commercial pet food manufacturers know more than you do?

No. Commercial pet food manufacturers are chasing the mighty dollar, just as most people are. Generally, they have very little interest in good quality. By the time you have finished reading this article, you’ll know more than they do.

Is homemade dog food preparation going to be messy?

No, not once you have the hang of what you’re doing, which is where I come in. I’m here to help you every step of the way.

Does it take a long time to prepare homemade dog food?

No, once you’ve got the hang of what you’re doing, it incredibly quick and easy.

Just as it can be in preparing your own homemade food.

So I’ve knocked away some of the most common excuses for not preparing your homemade dog food. But, as you still hesitate, there may be one hurdle in the way, which we haven’t covered.

You have been accustomed to believe commercial dog food is better than anything else. Your vet may have told you. Your parents may have told you. You see people feeding commercial pet food all the time. Can they all be wrong?

Yes!

Because none of them are looking to their dog’s origins. Dog evolved in the wild over many thousands of years, hunting in packs in times of plenty and eating carrion or plant matter in times of famine.

In contrast, commercial dog food typically pellets, is not raw or of the quality a hunted animal is. Dogs digestive systems and nutritional requirements have not changed or adapted, just because they are now domestic.

The best way to ensure your dog maintains not just good, but excellent health is to make homemade dog food, based on a wild dog’s diet. Sure, it isn’t possible to exactly duplicate a wild dog’s diet, but we can come so close that it won’t affect your dog’s health.

When you’re shopping in the supermarket, it’s just as easy to buy raw meat and bones as it is to purchase a packet. You can buy enough to keep your dog going until the next time you shop. Freezing food is an acceptable way to keep it, as it is not so destructive as cooking. Three or four days of fresh food and the rest thawed frozen food will be absolutely adequate to maintain good health.

Once you’ve measured out the food the first time, it’s just a matter of routine.

Keeping all the ingredients together means it’s convenient.

By making your own homemade dog food, you have control over the quality and the ingredients. This is critical to your dog’s good health as many ingredients in commercial pet food is toxic, not natural, not nutritious and certainly isn’t raw.

Try your dog on raw meat and bones for a month and you’ll see a big smile on his face!

Couple that with his drastically reduced health bills, and you’ll be the next one grinning.

Warning: in older dogs there can be an initial clearing period. This is natural and normal, but can look alarming if you don’t know what’s happening.

dog food obsession

My Garden

Is a fascinating place for my dogs.

They are now excluded from the shrubbery, have been fenced off from the top lawn, and are banned from swimming in the pond.

The former came about because Molly, my Black and White Springer, is intent on getting through the fence to sort out the upstart of a dog next door, who has the audacity to patrol the other side of OUR fence.

As soon as BJ the interoper appeared in the garden, Molly would trample over the border plants, barge through the shrubs and flatten any young shoots growing near the fence, in her urge to protect us from this fearsome Scottie.

The fence is 5 feet tall, and runs the full length of the shrubbery. Molly would patrol it hourly, Sniffing the air at intervals, stopping only to shoo off a visiting bird, that mistakenly thought that OUR garden was a free landing site.

She’s just as bad with the squirrel.

The squirrels feeding box is positioned at the bottom of the garden. in a tree, out of the way of cats and dogs, The food for the squirrel box is stored in a garden bench/storage box, on the patio. The squirrel is well aware of this makes a daily trip to see if he can raid our ’store’ to top up his.

He never can, but he keeps trying.

Molly does the squirrel run every morning, as soon as she is let out, it’s a ritual, she does a quick sniff round the patio, a sortie, down the garden, then back up for a more detailed survey of the area.

The squirrel sometimes infuriates her by sitting on the fence, and sticking out it’s tongue, before disappearing, back to it’s tree. It will return later, when Molly has finished her patrol, had breakfast and made her report.

Maisie, My Liver and White Springer, isn’t interested in wild, fearsome interloping Scottie’s at all.

She only pays a passing interest in squirrel scents, doesn’t bother with birds, and can take or leave slugs and snails.

Her passion is, THE POND!

It’s odd really, she never used to bother much with it, but recently we dug it out and enlarged it, She watched us intently, and after finding a few dozen fat slimy frogs, wallowing in the mud at the bottom, and having observed slippery, wriggling, bright coloured fish, caught in nets, and deposited into plastic containers, before being returned, a few days later, to the nice, clean, sparkling water, AND having witnessed polythene bags, full of illegal immigrant, new age traveller fish, that were obviously squatting on OUR pond, released to cause trouble, she is now obsessed with getting them back out again.

She is a nuisance really, the second she’s out in the garden she’s pondside, head hovering a few millimeters above the surface of the water, then she’ll rush round to the other side of the pond. and perform a similar minute inspection, I’m sure she counts the fish.

All that was fine, we could put up with that, but then the Heron found us, and ate the two biggest fish. So we put up heron wire, at different heights around the pond, It seems to have worked as we have lost any more fish, but we do have to replace the wire every few days as an excited Maisie, gets tangled up in it, in her quest to find the gypsy fish.

Yesterday though, was the final straw.

Last week we fitted a new pond filter, the old one had failed and the water was beginning to bear an ucanny resemblense to pea soup.

It took just over a week for the water to clear. so we could see the bottom of the pond. We could see the fish swimming again, but so could Maisie.

We heard the splash from indoors, and rushed out to find a soaking wet springer, running crazily round the pond, a murky, dark, dirty, pond, that matched the colour of the soil in the borders.

A quick look around and the reason for this became apparent.

Maisie has, for a day or two now, managed to work out that if she put a paw on each of sunken plant containers on the shallow, shelf end of the pond, she can peer out, further into the depths to see where the squatter fish are.

Every time she did this, the plant containers moved a little closer to the edge of the shelf, until eventually, they fell in taking Detective Maisie with them.

So the filter is now working overtime again, cleaning up what now resembled Brown Windsor soup. I think i prefered the pea colour to be honest.

Update

We have purchased a little power spray, filled it with water, and every time Maisie nears the edge of the pond, we give her a squirt. She likes to be wet, so it doesn’t bother her too much. But it does startle her, and makes her move back, away from the Heron trip wire, and more importantly, the pond edge..

Both my dogs are avid, ardent froggers. but that’s a story for another day.

Natural dog food brand with the TV advert with the dog that says “Tastes better than what was in there!”?

I saw an advert (UK television) for a new brand of natural dog food with a dog at the end that says “Tastes better than whatever was in there!” while looking at a bin, and throughout the advert plates of vegetables and meat are shown against the food (i.e. what’s in the food).

What is the brand?

It’s Pedigree better by nature.

I love that advert!

best dog food for boxers

Some dog breeds are more susceptible to allergies than others. This may be because of small nasal passages, allergic reactions to flea bites, irritable stomachs that make digesting food difficult, or they may be allergic to their own hair and dander. Dogs that have allergies include the following breeds: Bishon frise, terrier, retrievers, beagles, setters, and boxers. All dogs have the potential to be allergic to something, however.

The most common signs of allergies include raw skin where the dog has scratched, patches of hair missing, red skin, hives, coughing, sneezing, excessive chewing and licking of paws, watery eyes, vomiting, and diarrhea. While these symptoms may go away after a few days, you should monitor your dog’s behavior to see if the symptoms return. If they do, then you should take your dog to see a vet. Sometimes changing the type of dog food or buying a flea collar or spray is enough to help eliminate your dog’s allergy problems.

When a dog is suffering from allergies, their mood may change. They may become irritable, lethargic, clingy, or angry. Discipline will not work when the dog is having allergy issues. The best way to combat this problem is to learn how to care for your dog once you have isolated the cause of the allergies. This may mean keeping a journal of your dog’s activities and symptoms that you can show the vet, who will be able to recommend treatment.

Some smaller breeds may have breathing issues as they age, there is little that can be done except to keep their sleeping area clean, vacuum often, and consider buying a hepa filter that will trap dust, particles, and other air pollutants that are in the air. While it is important that all dogs get their exercise, when it is cold outside, keep small breeds indoors and play with them. This will keep them from getting head colds, which could make breathing even worse.

If you notice that your dog has fleas or that they have been bitten by fleas, you should bathe your dog using a shampoo that will kill fleas and their eggs. You may need to rid your home of fleas as well so that reinfestation does not occur. Buy carpet spray or if the problem is too big, then you may have to call an exterminator. Once the fleas are gone, you should spray your dog every time the dog goes outside. This will prevent new attacks from occurring. If the dog has open bites or wounds from scratching, you will have to wait for them to heal before using a spray or shampoo on your dog.

Vomiting can occur if your dog is allergic to the food it receives. You should first visit the vet to see if the problem isn’t internal. They may recommend a new food for the dog. This should stop the vomiting and diarrhea.

Dogs that are allergic to their own hair and dander have the worst allergies of all because there is little that can be done. You should make sure your dog is groomed regularly, brush your dog everyday to remove excess hair and dander, and bathe your dog once a month. Your vet may prescribe an anti-histamine if the allergies persist.
