homemade dog food vegetarian
Homemade vegetarian dog food?

My 17 year old springer spaniel has cirrohsis of the liver. Most dogs don’t live long enough to get it, but most small dogs will get cirrohsis if they live long enough.

I need a couple of recipes that will combine pasta and veggies. Or other things that are not meat.
Rosie almost died. The vet told me she had cirrohsis of the liver and was now a vegetarian for the remainer of her life.

That was a year ago. When she gets hold of a little bit of meat, she sinks to a point that I’m afraid she’ll die during the night.

The oldest dog, listed in Guinness book of records, died last year at the age of 27 years old. She was raised entirely on a diet of lentils and rice, with all fresh garden vegetables in season. She was healthy and active till the end, but required swimming exercise her last couple of years to stay comfortable.
To get your dog to accept a vegetarian diet, you can cook using broth from boiled meats or fish or canned, low sodium broth.

dog food homemade recipes

Busy people generally tend to shy away from home prepared food for themselves as well as their dogs. But relying on others for your and your dog’s nutritional needs is likely to ensure your dog’s health will suffer, if not your own.

What it really boils down to, is time. You think preparing homemade dog food is not time efficient, perhaps messy, and how can you be sure it’s healthy? Don’t commercial pet food manufacturers know more than you do?

No. Commercial pet food manufacturers are chasing the mighty dollar, just as most people are. Generally, they have very little interest in good quality. By the time you have finished reading this article, you’ll know more than they do.

Is homemade dog food preparation going to be messy?

No, not once you have the hang of what you’re doing, which is where I come in. I’m here to help you every step of the way.

Does it take a long time to prepare homemade dog food?

No, once you’ve got the hang of what you’re doing, it incredibly quick and easy.

Just as it can be in preparing your own homemade food.

So I’ve knocked away some of the most common excuses for not preparing your homemade dog food. But, as you still hesitate, there may be one hurdle in the way, which we haven’t covered.

You have been accustomed to believe commercial dog food is better than anything else. Your vet may have told you. Your parents may have told you. You see people feeding commercial pet food all the time. Can they all be wrong?

Yes!

Because none of them are looking to their dog’s origins. Dog evolved in the wild over many thousands of years, hunting in packs in times of plenty and eating carrion or plant matter in times of famine.

In contrast, commercial dog food typically pellets, is not raw or of the quality a hunted animal is. Dogs digestive systems and nutritional requirements have not changed or adapted, just because they are now domestic.

The best way to ensure your dog maintains not just good, but excellent health is to make homemade dog food, based on a wild dog’s diet. Sure, it isn’t possible to exactly duplicate a wild dog’s diet, but we can come so close that it won’t affect your dog’s health.

When you’re shopping in the supermarket, it’s just as easy to buy raw meat and bones as it is to purchase a packet. You can buy enough to keep your dog going until the next time you shop. Freezing food is an acceptable way to keep it, as it is not so destructive as cooking. Three or four days of fresh food and the rest thawed frozen food will be absolutely adequate to maintain good health.

Once you’ve measured out the food the first time, it’s just a matter of routine.

Keeping all the ingredients together means it’s convenient.

By making your own homemade dog food, you have control over the quality and the ingredients. This is critical to your dog’s good health as many ingredients in commercial pet food is toxic, not natural, not nutritious and certainly isn’t raw.

Try your dog on raw meat and bones for a month and you’ll see a big smile on his face!

Couple that with his drastically reduced health bills, and you’ll be the next one grinning.

Warning: in older dogs there can be an initial clearing period. This is natural and normal, but can look alarming if you don’t know what’s happening.

It used to be simple to feed your dog. You would buy some kind of dry dog chow and throw in some table scraps. As veterinary science became more advanced, veterinarians began to study nutrition. They realized that, just as for people, diet has a big impact on overall health. It became clear that grain based, processed dog food was not adequate to support a dogs health. There are now many high quality, meat based dog foods available with no artificial colors or fillers.

Now, another type of diet is becoming more popular. It is the BARF diet. This refers to bones and raw foods, or biologically appropriate raw food. The person behind this trend is Dr. Ian Billinghurst. Proponents of the BARF diet believe that, as dogs are descendants of the wolf, dogs will benefit from eating the way wolves eat in the wild. They believe that wild animals thrive because they do not eat processed food.

The BARF diet consists of 60% raw, meaty bones, 25% meat from organs, such as kidney, liver, tripe and brains. They also include fish and chicken carcasses. 15% of the diet is made up of vegetables and grains. In order to make sure the dogs get all the nutrients they need, proponents of the BARF diet supplement this raw food with oils, such as cod liver and flax seed oil, as well as vitamins, kelp powder and yogurt. I do not quite understand why, if this diet is so superior to high quality, commercial dog foods, there should be a need to add supplements. I doubt the healthy wolves in the wild supplement their diet.

Pet owners and breeders, and even veterinarians that feed their dogs BARF, claim the diet is what dogs were designed to eat, long before they became domesticated. Feeding this diet is believed to improve digestion, stop chronic diarrhea, improve coat and skin and strengthen the immune system. This feeding plan is a lot of work and is also expensive, which makes it impractical for many of us.

It should be noted that there are no scientific studies that show the BARF diet is better for dogs. There is always a chance of the dog getting sick from bacteria, like E. Coli and salmonella. Another problem is the risk of a shard of bone perforating the intestine. This can be fatal.

Fortunately, their are now many dog food brands that provide quality, meat based foods that include the vegetables, grains and all the other nutrients required for a healthy dog. If you choose one of these commercially prepared dog foods, that contain no artificial colors or fillers, and add a human grade, all natural pet vitamin, your dog will enjoy all the benefits of the BARF diet with less work, expense, and risk.
